À propos de moi

Howdy! Mila here, a Serbian woman with a restless and curious spirit who left everything competitive and material to get lost in the wonders of our beautiful planet in the attempt to find herself somewhere along the way.

Though I graduated from university, got my master's degree in international business and marketing, worked for high tech companies while living in big cities of the western society, I've come to realize that my soul yearns to exist in harmony with nature surrounded by down-to-earth people to heal each other and contribute to a greater good.

In early 2018 I finally replaced a corporate 9-5 for a remote job, a comfy furnished apartment for airports and suitcases, stuff for memories, routine for an adventure, rat race for a spiritual path. Still proudly riding through this digital nomad journey - my journey - my life.

Unlike tourists, I like to go slow. Instead of marking places off the list, I prefer localizing myself and really getting to know the culture of a destination I visit. This is not a race, it's life. Being alive to it all is the ultimate goal of each experience. Being a digital nomad is not a job or a trip - it's a lifestyle. Only a 'slowmad' can make life on the road enjoyable and sustainable in the long run, while 'gomad' adds unnecessary anxiety to it.

As an overthinker with a rational mind led by emotions with a highly sensitive nervous system to all sorts of external and internal stimulations, I often find existence a very painful place to be. It took me a lot of suffering until I finally started to understand myself better, work towards full acceptance, and turn inwards in seek for answers and protection.

I am very friendly, outgoing, kind, and understanding. However, I’m an introvert. My life is an endless balancing between community and solitude. Social life is something I deeply desire and get drained from at the same time. I recharge alone. It feels like I only ever go out to get the fresh appetite to be alone. Similarly, I only ever long for me-time to fuel up for a new round of social interactions.

I went to music school and play piano since I was 5. The music I play is a reflection of my mood at the moment. Piano is one of the ways I express and channel my emotions, and balance my nervous system. To me, a melody says more than words. I really miss piano on my travels.

My favorite animal is dolphin; I'd love to swim with them one day. I am a proud owner of a stray dog I saved from the streets. Her name is Rea and she lives with my brother. I like to cook and prefer eating healthy homemade dishes over dining outdoors. I'm always excited to experiment with new recipes. Of course I like to taste different cuisines when I travel.

I draw mandalas as a form of active meditation which helps me plug out, relax and boost creativity. I am prone to anxieties and for that reason I try to find ways to integrate mindfulness into my everyday life: to step out of the thinking mind, become aware of getting lost in thoughts, and return back to the body. It's a bumpy road full of ups and downs but as everything in life requires full commitment through it all to benefit on the long run. "Day by day seems like nothing changes but when I look back, everything is different" :)

I like to translate my thoughts and ideas into words, so I write them down occasionally and read retroactively months or even years later. Expressing myself through the written word helps me a lot in my journey of self-discovery. I also read a lot; books are always my preferred choice over any type of screen entertainment or education.

Traveling is the air I breathe. Routine can literally kill me. I fear stagnation. My biggest passion is to go places, get lost in unexplored corners of this world, meet new people, listen to stories, learn and heal through interpersonal connections, live from the heart, and create memories I'd dearly remember.

I use every chance to chase destinations, spend time in nature, take long walks with no intended direction, overdose my body with vitamin D (sunny days never get old), and keep my body-mind-soul in balance as much as possible (always challenging!)

If you’ve read this far, I’m already quite convinced we should meet. Hit me up and convince me even more by saying why you think so ;)

Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing

I joined CS in 2012 when I started living abroad and traveling extensively, but my roommate situation never allowed me to host people, while my trips were usually organized in different arrangements.

Being a tourist with a city map in hands, tour guide with a flag, following a bunch of retirees who take pictures of every corner has never appealed to me. When I go places, I like to truly be a part of everything around me, to assimilate fully, to get the most out of every new city area, or region, to learn as much as possible about local life, culture, people - to exist like a local. I believe that CS allows you to meet new people and experience traveling from a totally new perspective.

CS is a huge community full of like-minded people who have a desire to connect with each other. It makes me really happy to be a part of this project and share my stories with fellow travelers and hosts around the world, as well as allow them to enrich my life and become an invaluable part of it.

Morceaux de musique, films et livres

MUSIC

I'm very eclectic concerning music taste. The music I listen to mostly depends on my mood at the moment. I appreciate authentic artists and stay away from mainstream. My favorite genre is indie pop, I also like melancholic, some darker tones as well, synth-pop, and some electronic bits. As a piano player, I started appreciating classical music very early in life - that’s another big love. My ears hurt when I hear hip-hop, metal, psychedelic, punk, folk - those are a no go.

MOVIES

With life on the go and an online job, I rarely sit in front of the screen unless I really have to. But when I do, I usually do it for either relaxing or educational purposes. I watch YT channels a lot and, due to my short attention span and hyperactive nature, I prefer shorter videos over long documentaries. In rare cases when I go for a movie or series, similarly as with music, I appreciate independent movies and directors over mainstream.

BOOKS

I’ve always been more a book than a movie type of person, so my book selection will always take more space on a shelf than CDs. If the story gets me, I can get lost in words and often lose touch with time, space and reality. When it comes to good novels and Russian classics, I’m not picky - the type of stories that can keep my attention is quite broad. Philosophy has always been one of my main areas of interest, while in the past few years I’ve become more interested in psychology and spirituality too, so my books of choice are usually a good psychological novel, an intriguing philosophical narrative, or ideally a combination of both.
