About Me

I'm a writer, a storyteller and a filmmaker. I love travelling and exploring a place through the people I meet.

I moved around a great deal with my parents when I was young. They ran a pub, and would do it up over two years then sell and we'd move somewhere else in the country and they would get another one. It seems like a lot of moving but I loved it as a kid. I actually went to 12 different schools while growing. It taught me the importance of making friends and staying in touch with the ones you meet along the way. I saw a lot of my big country from an early age.

I'm obsessed with great storytelling of all kinds. I probably watch far too many films than I should, but I like to balance it out with novels and the odd live show like the Moth (super excited to see a few while in NYC).

I love cooking and philosophical chats and exploring places with new friends. I do a lot of writing while I travel and would be happy to regale a story or two that I am working on over a cup of tea. :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

A place is only a place until you meet the people you can share it with, I find.

Hostels can be fun and a sublet is comfortable but I find spending time with locals is always far more interesting and memorable.

Interests

Good food.

Good coffee.

Long walks with interesting people.

Films, films, films!

New experiences.

Beautiful conversations that go to heart of things.

Connecting with people.

Eating all the foods! :)

Music, Movies, and Books

So many!

I have been trying to read something local in all the places I go. I read the Three Musketeers and Cyrano De Bergerac while in Bordeaux, France. Read Brooklyn while camping along the Wild Atlantic Way along the west coast of Ireland about an Irish girl who is sent to Brooklyn - which was my next stop. :)

I love the classics Bram Stoker, Ernest Hemmingway, Dickens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Mary Shelley. Had a period with the beat poets; Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs. But recently been reading a lot of sci fi of Ernst Cline and Michael Marshall Smith - Only Forward - Wow!

But absolutely love anything by John Irving, Micheal Chabon or Elmore Leonard.

Movies! Seriously, I will watch most films good or bad just to analyse the storytelling but love everything from big blockbusters to obscure 70's french films.

All my music choices have come through friends and passionate strangers with recommendations. Amy Winehouse has been on rotation again since I watched the documentary - Amy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

So many to choose from.

I recently hiked up to the top of Croag Patrick, one of Ireland's highest mountains in sideways rain in freezing conditions. It was a challenge to say the least, but the view made it all worth it.

Surfed in Porto Escondido among dolphins.

Lived in the ruins of a 1000-year-old monastery in Portugal.

Survived a terrifying attack by a pack of dogs in Mexico.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a writer, filmmaker and photographer.

I can definitely help you with any of these and promise to take the best picture you have ever seen of yourself. :)

I do headshots for actors, so have given people great new linkin pics on my travels.

I love learning new things and would be happy to teach anything I know which anyone finds interesting.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can definitely share my photography skills. If you need the best photo you have ever seen of yourself then I'm your guy. :)
