About Me

Hello there.
The name's Mitra.
I'm twenty-six years old and originally from Tehran. I was born in Tokyo to Iranian-American parents and lived there for the first 7 years of my life.
English is my first language, and I learned Persian later at school when we moved to Kish Island.
Around four years ago, I sold everything I had, quit my job, gave away my pets, left my ex-boyfriend, and backpacked/hitchhiked in Mashhad and South Khorasan. I'd intended on leaving the country after this "farewell trip" I'd planned.

Fast forward to today, and I've lived in Mashaad for two years, another 6 months in the most remote desert village in Iran (with almost no service or internet!), and a year in Isfahan; which is where I currently reside.

Needless to say, I'm not going anywhere. I love this place and these people. Living anywhere else would be devoid of meaning. I'm not a big fan of Western imperialism anyway.

I love traveling and I've been to quite a few countries. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures, and I love explaining about my own unique culture (not to mention busting false stereotypes and first impressions people almost always have about us).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I wanted to encourage more foreigners to visit Iran in general and help put a stop to the unjustified fear and stereotyping.
I also wanted to work on my Spanish skills :)
Maybe i'll get to travel the world in an intimate, natural, and cost effective way once I can save up enough despite these crazy inflation/exchange rates.

Interests

I absolutely love traveling.
I've visited around 12 different countries since I was a child. I used to dream of living in each country for an extended period of time...soaking up the culture..and then moving on to the next country and my next adventure.
But now i'd rather do this to each of the 32 provinces of Iran.

I enjoy learning languages. I speak English and Persian fluently and am currently studying Spanish. Being multilingual is another life goal of mine.
I'm planning a trip to Amenia in a couple of months, so I'm trying to learn a bit of that too. It's really hard, though...if you're Armenian hit me up!

The most interesting aspect of travel is getting to know that area's culture. I want to know the intricacies and the messiness and the contradictions. All the little quirks and secrets that make each unique.

Food. I love food. Yeah.
Please teach me your countries' recipes.

Bonus points if you can play music or sing.
I'm taking traditional Iranian singing classes and reaaally basic piano.

Music, Movies, and Books

I listen to a lot of genres, and I can appreciate other people's tastes in music. Though personally I mostly enjoy alternative music, rock, jazz, blues, indie or generally music from older decades...
Traditional Iranian music has a special place in my heart, and I'm learning more and more about it each day.
There's quite a lively underground/modern music scene centered in Tehran, which I love.

I'd really enjoy getting to know your culture's music and can definitely introduce you to a couple of my personal favorite Iranian singers.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I think this question is way too sensationalist :))

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you about Iranian culture. How to cook some Iranian dishes. Plus, help you with your English. We can talk about sustainability when traveling and how you, as a traveler, can best support Iranian locals and their businesses.
I love talking about art too :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

Probably good conversation. Maybe even a few insightful observations on life, people, you.
