About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Being a good listener

ABOUT ME

Devout Quaker, singer, historian, cook, anarchist, artist, wanderer, ponderer, queer. I lived in co-ops on both edges of the continent for about 10 years. I love walking, looking at/for plants, and gathering wild edibles. I love making things. I love singing/performing with other people. I have directed a medieval music ensemble and have promiscuously involved myself in a variety of experimental/avant garde performances. I love teaching. I have a PhD in medieval history, have taught or worked at colleges in Vermont and New York, and am now embarking on a teaching credential for high school.

PHILOSOPHY

I try to live my life with simplicity, integrity, love, and devotion to God and my fellow creatures.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I was converted to the CouchSurfing experience when two friends and I went on an amazing road trip down south (we began in Providence, RI, and ended up just south of Savannah, GA). On the way, we couchsurfed twice via my friend who has an account. What an amazing way to experience a place, with the people who live there day to day! Since then I've been able to host several folks and it has been so wonderful meeting new people, spending time with them, and showing them my city.

Unfortunately, I am no longer able to host because I live in a tiny Brooklyn apartment with my boyfriend and a one-eyed orange cat. But hopefully I'll be able to get back to it soon.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: early music, traditional/folk music of many kinds and many places, live jazz, experimental music.
Books: Edible and Useful Plants of California (Charlotte Clarke), Radical Presence: Teaching as Contemplative Practice (Mary Rose O'Reilley), The Mountains of California (John Muir), The Land of Little Rain (Mary Austin), Through Vegetal Being (Luce Irigaray & Michael Marder), The Sacred Harp, The Shaker Spiritual

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once, I was taking out the compost late one night. As I poured the giant bucket of veggie trimmings into the bin, a tiny white owl flew up and landed in a nearby tree. Both of us stood there for a few moments staring at one another in disbelief.
