About Me

Mission:
Look for more new ways to retain my sense of awe, wonder and appreciation about how unbelievable and wonderful everything is.

About me:
I'd rather cook dinner than eat out
I prefer to wake up early for the sunrise more than get out to see the sunset
I like to have controversial opinions but I'm really uncomfortable offending people
I love extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
I eat a vegan diet, but I refuse to push my diet upon others.

Philosophy:
Imperfection is more beautiful (and interesting!) than perfection. Being comfortable with how things are instead of how I would like things to be is a constant goal. This philosophy becomes a problem when my clothes are ratty and in bad shape and other people don't seem to think it looks very good!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm relatively new to Guelph, so I'm hoping to get to know more local people as well as get to spend time with people passing through!

Interests

I love learning about nearly everything but in particular I love learning about ecology. I am fascinated by plants. I spend as much of my free time as possible out hiking looking to find new plant species and observing them in their natural habitat. Ferns and orchids have been my main focus for the last few years.

I spend as much time as I can with my friends. Doing anything with people I enjoy is great, from laying around watching TV to doing long distance canoe racing. If I'm doing it with good people, I'm almost certainly up for it.

I also really love disc sports - ultimate frisbee and disc golf, though I can't say i'm particularly good!

Music, Movies, and Books

Books:
Farley Mowat and Kurt Vonnegut are probably my favourite authors. I really enjoy their light hearted and quirky way of looking at the world.

More recently I have read a number of books either written by or about aboriginal Canadians, like The Orenda, or The Reason You Walk. Learning about the aboriginal experience in Canada, both historically and in the present, have added a lot to my understanding of my home.

Music:
If it's upbeat and makes you feel good, i almost certainly like it! Especially if it gets you grooving.

Movies/TV:
I'm not a movie guy really but I'm drawn to Quentin Tarantino (probably the only director whose gory movies I enjoy) and The Coen Brothers.

South Park has continued to impress me with its creative and complex social commentary. I'm also known to quote the Simpsons.... often.

I also listen to a ton of podcasts. There's so many good ones!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've had the good fortune to spend quite a bit of time in the Canadian Arctic. That part of the country is near and dear to my heart and I could wistfully talk for hours about why its so great!

Teach, Learn, Share

I read often about current affairs happening around the world, but really appreciate learning about a place from the perspective of someone who is from there. I have been surprised so many times to hear peoples personal experiences living in places where my perception has been totally wrong. I like having my preconceived notions turned upside down and welcome people to change my mind on things!

If we get out for any time outside together, I'll do my best to share the little I know on the local ecology. I'd be happy to learn from others more to broaden what I know too!
