I've used couchsurfing a couple of times around Europe and the USA, and it has turned out to be a truly positive experience. Although I enjoy staying in hostels, couchsurfing gives you the benefit of meeting local people who can recommend their hobbies and ways to enjoy their cities to the fullest from a different perspective.
