ABOUT ME

I'm a kid at heart, in an older body; a born storyteller, a lover of both solitude and the social world, a FT traveler in the world since late 2021.

Play and laughter are essential for the soul. I love engaged conversations and coming to understand what makes others tick.

I dream of learning to make documentary films and getting serious about writing in part for a living. Learning the import/export trade interests me a great deal as well. And I'm launching a blog.

Importantly, I have to steer clear of places with perfume, cologne, incense, smoke, heavy pet odors, and strong personal care products. So please show up without anything scented on you or to use while here.

PHILOSOPHY

It's a short life, so why not sing on the journey? One day many, many years ago it occurred to me that we can all conjure up some kind of evidence to support virtually any belief imaginable, so why not work on choosing beliefs that support Life and risk making the world a better place? That of course, is a work in progress for me, only over when my powdered bones drift in the wind over an ocean or mountaintop one day.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I was a Servas traveler and host for decades, staying with hosts all over the world. I've surfed with CS hosts in a few places and hosted a few delightful women and men.

Neuroscience, acoustic music, massage, intelligent conversation, laughter, anything to do with the ocean, including sea kayaking, adventure of many sorts, mountains, grasslands, hiking, dogs, traveling, optimal health and not just the absence of illness, a thousand things more than I can list here.

Folk music, singer/songwriter, mellow jazz like solo saxophone, TAIKO drumming, string instruments, CELTIC!!, Klezmer, some classical. I get surprised by new things that others introduce me to, so surprise me!

I need fiction and STORIES like I need good food, sleep and clean water. At the existential level, fiction is a comfort, reminding me that that we really are all connected. With fiction we can practice being human in new ways and we can let our imaginations soar! We get to walk many miles in others' shoes.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Spent four months hitchhiking solo through eastern and southern Africa in 1989, then again for three months in 1998 just in South Africa. It restored my faith in life and humanity after my father's suicide on the first trip and it really helped me sort out my life priorities on the second trip.

My Christmas week trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro in bad weather and near-failure was unforgettable.

A night I spent wet, hypothermic, terrified, alone and lost on a mountain on Kodiak island in Alaska when I was 21 was one of the most remarkable, find-out-what-I'm-made-of nights of my life.

I got to jump into the WILD white water of the Zambezi River on a raft trip and was consumed by a massive whirlpool. I was a much bigger risk-taker in my 20s and 30s. I'm in my 60s now, but never past some fun and adventure.

I fell in love once many years ago, one of the most remarkable experiences I've ever had....having my soul opened by a living laser beam. From today's perspective I see not just the overwhelming emotional and spiritual experience of it, but how powerful the drive of evolutionary biology is and how much we are ALL animals. Still......love rules.
