About Me

My name's Jon, and I'm an aspiring adventurer, a teacher, author, and a (two-time) former political candidate.

Life is too short to spend in one place, so I've spent a few years living in a couple Chinese cities, traveling around the region, and making money as a teacher. Then I went to Saudi Arabia for a year and did that again! Then I went to grad school in Germany, and now I'm volunteering in Guatemala.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I hitchhiked across America in 2016 and wanted to meet people and not pay for shelter. I like going to new places and meeting locals, and I figure I ought to pay it forward and host people if possible.

Hotels (and rent everywhere) are too expensive, so Couchsurfing is a small way to get back at those companies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In 2016, I hitchhiked across America (DC to LA) in 17 days, spending less than $100. I started in winter (3/15) and got about two dozen rides across ten states, and had all sorts of adventures. In 2018, I published a book about the experience. If you're interested in learning more or being redirected to the Amazon link, visit hitchhikeamerica.com

Teach, Learn, Share

I've taught Latin, World Cultures, English, American Government, Economics, Leadership, ESL, and American History across ten schools in the U.S., China, and Saudi Arabia. I love learning more than I love teaching. The best learning/connecting is done through deep dive conversations that orbit philosophy, politics, geography, history, and economics.

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, Belize, Cambodia, Canada, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Palestine, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Ukraine, United States, Viet Nam
