About Me

Murphy= an Irish name meaning Sea Warrior. I do have Irish roots. I do love the sea (having lived on a sailboat for a year). But I prefer peace to war. Anyway, I am a traveling minstrel who loves the companionship of good friends, good food, and a good fingerboard and frets (guitars!) When I am not traveling or orbiting the Coastal California art and music scene, I am bunkered up in my recording studio shack, high in the mountains east of San Diego, making music for and with birds, coyotes, and occasionally humans.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To meet the most interesting and colorful people in the world, and soak up inspiration to last a lifetime, while spreading a little joy and compassion.

Music, Movies, and Books

My life is spent creating or producing more music than I consume, but I do have some faves: Miles and Coltrane are the kings. BT is my musical bruthafromanotamotha, Sting and the Police(and lots of other 80's vibes), Incubus, Amos Lee, WIlliam Fitzsimmons, Calexico. FlyLo, ThunderCat, Gambino when i wanna hear some trill. And there are some eternal classics: Jack Johnson, Jimi, Pink FLoyd, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince.

READING- I read so much non-fiction that I rarely get time to read "stories" but I read a ton of non-fiction. When I get just the tiny bit curious about a subject I usually read a stack of books on the topic. CURRENTLY READING: Afrofuturism, The Populist Explosion, General Viticulture, The Year of Voting Dangerously.

Movies: Anything from Terry Gilliam, Gus Van Sant, Wes Anderson. Dumb and Dumber.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Breathing is prettttyyyy amazing. Running an organic farm is a pretty amazing and inspiring task, but as far as natural wonders go, it would be between hiking the Sierra Mountains or sailing the ocean blue.

Teach, Learn, Share

I consider myself a student of the world before anything else. The past decade or so my curricula has been the amazing interconnected web of noises we earthlings call music, organic systems engineering AKA farming, with some forays into sailing, audio technology, and construction/electricity/design AKA building stuff. For my guests, you may get the chance to witness a recording session take place when you stay here, and hosts perhaps we can have a jam session when i stay there!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, laughter, and an open mind.
