About Me

I try to look at the world through the view of the extraordinary, of the marvellous, of the enchanting. Nothing is too commonplace if you know how to look at the marvel in it. I'm active, adventurous, curious, eager to learn, always in want of knowing new cultures, new stories, new points of view. Can't wait to meet you from a different background!

I'm a journalist working as a proofreader. I'm a writer too and independent researcher. I'm half Portuguese and many times will act more as a Portuguese than as a Brazilian! I and my husband, who is also a writer and researcher, live in a simple yet spacious house on the suburbs with one elder cat, an ongoing garden and tons of books. We love to walk through the streets , observing old buildings, telling stories about them, going to museums and cafés, cooking a nice dinner (my Portuguese half loves to feed people), have long chats about any subject - nothing is forbidden from football to religion.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

There's no better way to expand your horizons than to know and live another culture. If you're stuck in your comfort zone, you'll never grow up properly. And you cannot do it in a strictly touristic routine! Be around locals, going where they go, talking with them, is the only way to really know another culture. That's the way I like to travel and the way I'm willing to show.

Music, Movies, and Books

For today:

Music: I'm listening to a lot of Irish traditional music lately. The Beatles, The Dubliners, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Erik Marchand, Chico Buarque, Ira!, Rossini, Planxty, Elomar, Amália Rodrigues, Zaz, BeBe, Beethoven. And those are the "regular" ones - my taste in music is very peculiar.

Movies: Last film watched was "Mirage", a Spanish film. Casablanca, Star Wars, Pan's Labyrinth, Short Cuts, Taste of Cherry, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Inglorious Basterds, Sunset Boulevard, The Innocents, and so on.

Books: I'm reading "Eles e Elas", a book with chronicles by the Brazilian Belle Epoque writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida. Favourite includes, but not limitates to, Wuthering Heighs, Lord of the Rings, Germinal, The Name of the Rose, Guerilla Days in Ireland, Poe, Tolstoy, Wilde, Anna Akhmatova, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Fernando Pessoa, Shakespeare, François Villon, Ernie O'Malley.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went on a solo trip to Ireland in 2016, my first visit to a country that I love since childhood. I couchsurfed for the first time, took part of the Easter Rising Centenary celebrations in 24th April, went to a road trip all by myself to West Cork, visited most of the places associated with the subject of my research - and then dived deep into the research itself. Then I took a boat and a train and made the entire way from Dublin to London the way it was made a hundred years ago!

Next step is hopefully to turn that research in a book.

Teach, Learn, Share

According to my brother, as a journalist, I have "an ocean of knowledge, an inch deep"! I know a little about a lot of things, from physics to political science, from international law to crochet. And I'm always anxious to share and to learn more!

I can teach how to pack a perfect luggage, how to plan a backpacking trip, how to multiply a violet, how to make jam and bread, how to cook Brazilian sweets and bacalhoada (Portuguese salted cod dish), a Chinese dish and a Vegetarian dinner, how to write your own small newspaper, how to crochet, and how to swear in multiple languages!

I can also give you a free tarot reading - if you're interested, please tell me in advance to allow me to pack my cards.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm well organized and a good cook! I know many Brazilian songs from several genres (from rock to "forro") and I'd love to share them - and I can try to sing in your own language if you give me lyrics (I promise I can do that without ruining the song!). I also can share my weird playlist!
