One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Traveling in Korea and Taiwan alone. I can say that I am now brave enough to get out of my comfort zone.
My invaluable experiences as an English teacher abroad
Growing up in Thailand and living in comfort zone since I was born, I always believed that our world has only bright side. People helped each other. Children received the same education standards and we can do everything that we want. After watching a Taiwan documentary, I became intrigued with their cultures and way of life and I decided to go there as a volunteering. I decided to step out of my comfort zone. There were many programs that I could choose such as farming, teaching, building library and camping. I chose teaching because at the beginning, I only wanted to know whether I could be a teacher or not. I had volunteered as an English teacher at St. Aloysius Technical School, Hsinchu County, Taiwan for 3 months. Due to facing culture shock that came with living in Taiwan and experiencing such different culture, I sometimes felt tired. However, there was no feeling such going back home and giving up. After I tried to adapt myself and opened my mind, I have learned many new skills like how to use chopsticks, how to speak Chinese, how to control classroom and how to work with other teachers. I also found Taiwanese people's lifestyles fascinating and I wanted to learn more about Taiwanese cultures. For instances, I had learned how to drink tea with the elder and about their interesting local food like sticky tofu. Having passed all the tough time that came with volunteering abroad, I gradually became more responsible and self–esteem. Moreover, my social and relationship skills were increased. I left there with precious memories. There is no feeling in the world would be better than the feeling when your students tell you that you are their favorite teacher and your efforts can positively impact on their life. The benefits of volunteering are countless. It is always beyond our expectations because what you can receive after volunteering are invaluable. You changed people’s lives and it also changed yours. You brought inspiration, energy and essential practical skills to others and broader opportunities for all. You may never know what you will learn, whom you can influence, and how it will change both your and their world. You may never know unless you try it, you may never know unless you try it, and now, it's your turn to step out of your comfort zone and being a volunteer abroad.
