This is a bit of a crossover between "About Me" and "Interests"

I'm a Burner at heart. The desert is my home that I go back to each year to remind myself about what's important. Excited to be going to Burn outside of South Africa soon!

My friends are my chosen family and the value of community is really important to me.

I believe in kindness, in treating people as people, respecting what people need and ask for, no matter how different it is to your world view. As long as people aren't hurt, people should be exactly who they are and do exactly what they want.

I never do something just because that's how I think it should be or how I assume the world works. If something makes me uncomfortable, then I'll often deliberately explore that thing to see how and where I find myself in relation to it. More often than not, it ends up being a part of me. I like to challenge people's perceptions.

--- I'm an atheist.
--- I often say my religion is love.
--- I'm queer.
--- I want a lot more tattoos than what I have.
--- I'm a maker-of-things.
--- I bake bespoke cakes.
--- I'm a huge fan of cuddle puddles.
--- I'm a swing dancer (although I don't dance that much at the moment.)
--- I aim to have my hair have been each colour of the rainbow one day. ;)

Perché sono iscritto su Couchsurfing

How rad the people that I've met that were traveling and have stayed with me have been! (Obviously).

Couchsurfing is 100% within my life view: community, inclusivity, exploring the wonderfully different things about others, sharing your world in return, connecting with communities of people in places you travel to, and seeing the world through their eyes.

I'd much rather someone saves some money on accommodation in their travels, and gets to discover and experience more of a place, than the other way around.

I love meeting other travellers and hearing their stories!

Interessi

These are more Travel Interests than General Interests. I have a few "big trip" travel dreams that I'm slowly working towards:

--- I want to backpack with pretty much little-to-no plans for around three years, with the idea of having just enough money saved up to get me to the first place and as a backup for if I'm in trouble, but figuring the rest out as I go, following the path of least resistance financially, finding work as I go, and spending enough time in each place to properly connect with the people and the culture as opposed to a fly-by-night tourist approach.

--- In Zahara, the old '67 VW Beetle my nesting partner has, I want to drive up from the bottom of South Africa where we are, all the way up to the Northern lights. Similarly, I want to drive from Argentina all the way up to Canada in the Beetle.

--- I'd also would love a tiny house that can move about that I've worked on and built myself, and do an extended trip / life long travels in it.

Musica, film e libri

BOOKS:
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Robert M. Pirsig), anything Terry Pratchett, The Kingkiller Chronicles Trilogy and The Slow Regard of Silent Things (Patrick Rothfuss), Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit (JRR Tolkien), Wild (Clint Willis), Women Who Run With Wolves (Clarissa Pinkola Estes), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: a Trilogy in Five parts (Douglas Adams)

MUSIC:
Ahhhh I have a bit of a problem trying to say what sort of music I like. I know what I don't like though: any very commercialised music that sounds the same as the next song. That said, some stern favourites are The Cat Empire, Incubus, Tame Impala, The Shins, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Fleet Foxes. Loads of local bands too. I like reggae, trance, classical music, punk rock, "indie" (whatever that means), drum & bass, folk, rap, swing... It's mostly super mood-dependent. ;)

MOVIES:
Also a tricky one. Some others that jump to mind are Pan's Labyrinth, Wes Anderson films, Garden State, Edward Scissorhands, Amélie, Donnie Darko, Audrey Hepburn films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Into The Wild, The Intouchables, Quintin Tarantino films, Let the Right One In, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, anything from Hayao Miyazaki, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, the Harry Potter series and pretty much any Jonny Depp movie. I tend to like art films, but also enjoy a good old superhero movie for some mindless fun.

Una cosa incredibile che ho fatto

THING ONE (a little thing):

A bike trip up Namibia together with my dad on his old 1983 BMW R80 GS!

THING TWO (a big thing):

I helped care for a remarkable girl named Natalie, a small girl from Cape Town with a big impact on the world.

She was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer when she was 10 and earned her angel wings when she was 13. Through her too-short life, she earned the love, gratitude and respect of all who knew her and the ever-expanding global community that is Natalie’s Circle of Love.

Over time, I became more and more involved with her family, and my title morphed into Doer of All Things. This had me fulfilling a caregiving role, fundraising, doing Art with Natalie as she got sicker, creating art as she would like it as she was not able to anymore, being her official nail painter, medicine regulation, homeschooling, etc. but predominantly holding the space. I know it was a very special thing to do and give, but more than anything she gave to me: she changed me and my world, my way of life, how I see things, everything.

Since Natalie’s death in November 2013, the circle of love continues to grow. Through Natalie’s Circle of Love Foundation, we honour her values of care, creativity and collaboration. We are following Natalie’s strict instructions to help children and families impacted by rare diseases and to improve palliative care.

If you'd like to know about her and her journey, please visit the Natalie's Circle of Love Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/nataliescircleoflove/
