About Me

I will be in Glasgow for the World Science Fiction Convention from August 8 to August 12, 2024 and continue traveling until Oktober 24, 2024.
I have hosted International backpackers since 2008. Anyone who hosts me, or I have given a positive reference to will be guaranteed a place to stay if I am not traveling.

POLITICS and PHILOSOPHY
Neo-Marxist Revisionist (Marxism for the 21st century) Eco-socialist, utopian, secular humanist, devout atheist.

I was an Army brat and grew up in Japan during the occupation and on various Army bases in Japan, Texas, Hawaii and Washington.

I am an avid science fiction fan, world traveler, political radical and futurist thinker, waiting for the post human, technological singularity...

I was a US Navy musician, a teacher, parole agent, and internet activist, but the vocation I really enjoyed was working for supplemental (unscheduled charter) airlines as a flight attendant supervisor.

For 20 years I traveled all over the world transporting chartered passengers to exotic locations, prisoner flights, providing emergency disaster relief, evacuating refugees from war zones, transporting US troops and United Nations Peacekeepers.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've been hosting couch surfers since 2008; it's been mostly great, except for a couple bad apples.

When I was a young hippie, long before there was an internet, I traveled around the world looking for adventure, 'crashing' in an abandoned sailboat in Tahiti, a windmill in the Netherlands, a lighthouse in Spain, castle ruins, a boatel in Amsterdam, a fishing boat on the Ganges in India, in caves in the Mediterranean etc. One such cave was in Matala, Crete where I met and talked with Joni Mitchell.

I met many kindred souls who would flash me the peace sign when they saw my long hair and would offer me a place to "crash", the Brotherhood of the Road.

Couch surfing is a way for me to pay it forward and I give priority to anyone who has or will host me in return.

I also have 40 acres of rugged land in Shasta County near French Gulch and Whiskeytown, not far from Sutter's Mill where gold was first discovered in California. My Green Party Ecowarrior friends are reconnoitering the property hoping to design an intentional community, living off the grid with earth sheltered communal housing. Anyone interested can contact me to homestead or camp on my property.

COUCH SURFING EXPERIENCE

Most of my guests have been wonderful people; honest, mature, responsible individuals and have received positive references.

I've had a few bad experiences. A woman who claimed to be a Buddhist monk demanded that I pick her up after waking me at midnight.

One girl begged me to stay even though she had known references. I felt sorry for her because her parents had kicked her out for posing nude on the internet to get money. I sat her down and had a talk with her when she told me she was going on sugar daddy websites. I was able to refer her to resources for housing and to further her education.

Couchsurfers are often grateful and offer to clean or cook. I don't ask or expect it and it really isn't necessary. If I have time I often make pancakes for breakfast and my famous pasta.

The worst experience I ever had was a German woman who arrived with no money and had no references. She arrived on my doorstep at night so I felt obligated to let her stay for the night and I would provide her with a reference to find another host. She stayed for a week. She was hungry so I fed her and loaned her my bus pass, which she never returned. She became extremely hostile when I told her I had other couch surfers arriving. After she finally left, I discovered she had robbed me of my rent money while I was taking a shower. I notified oversight staff so she won't be able to victimize anyone else.

Interests

I play baseball, bodysurf, ski and cycled the North Island of New Zealand. I have a deluxe Scrabble board and playing cards

I'm a voracious reader, attend Science Fiction and Green Party conventions.

I have always tried to practice a minimalist lifestyle and maintain a low carbon footprint. I am an ecowarrior, anti-establishmentarian, climate environmentalist activist.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In 1963, as a young Navy Seaman based at Anacostia Naval Air Station outside of Washington DC, my friend, John Louis Evans and I went to the Poor Peoples March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to see Martin Luther King. It opened my eyes to racial inequality and oppression in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. America still has a looong way to go to end bigotry and class struggle...

After the Navy I hitched to rock concerts and demonstrations all over the country; Kent State, the Battle in Seattle, Million Mom March, and every anti-Vietnam moratorium, etc.

I toured New Zealand on a bicycle in 1989 and 1990 and have backpacked in Europe, Turkey, Iran, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Australia, Tahiti, etc. I often crashed on floors and couches or slept in my bivouac sac wherever I ended up at night.

I've lived in caves in Matala, Crete and Formentera, Spain, stayed in a windmill, a lighthouse, a canal boat in Amsterdam, a boat on the Ganges, and a sailboat abandoned by Joanne Woodward in Tahiti.

I was a Peacekeeper for Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention in August 2016 and stayed in the basement of the Arch Memorial Church with other activists. I was very disappointed when Bernie sold out and supported Hillary Clinton instead of Jill Stein and rolled over again for the rigged primaries in 2020. That was when I realized Bernie, AOC and the fraud squad, were the controlled opposition.

Teach, Learn, Share

I often find myself mentoring some of the couch surfers I host; travel and how to save money tips, where to rent a bicycle for only $20 a day, access to my copious collection of Lonely Planet and other travel books, etc.

My Facebook page was hacked, and I lost all my data and travel photos since 2006. The hacker demanded a $400 Apple gift card. If anyone knows how to restore my data, your guaranteed a couch.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I have hosted many couch surfers since 2008, most were responsible and considerate. I usually fed them oatmeal, eggs, pancakes, etc. for brekkie and my famous pasta for dinner. I give priority to couch surfers who have hosted me and almost always provide my couch surfers with a glowing reference.

I have been hosted in Spokane WA, San Jose, CA, Helsinki, Finland, and Dublin, Ireland where I attended World Science Conventions. I was also hosted in Bakersfield for the Green Party Assembly and in Salt Lake City for the Annual National Meeting with Jill Stein.

I was a Bernie Peacekeeper in 2016 and 2020. l am currently a Green Party delegate and on the Credentialing and Peace Committees.
