About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To continue on the travel dream! I just hit my 70th country traveled (August 2016)! I wanna travel as many as possible!! I want as many different experiences as possible and I want the people of the world to be part of it with me!

PHILOSOPHY

No one knows their own destination beyond this world so lets enjoy and explore the one we live in for as long and as much as we can- it's amazing!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My experience of CS'ing has been all positive so far and has allowed me to be part of something special!
Newman will be couchsurfing to city near by you very soon :)

Interests

I have dedicated the last 12 years of my life travelling on-off, subject to saving back up to go away. I'm a daring backpacker who likes to take off the beat and track routes to avoid mass tourists (although sometimes that's impossible).

I really enjoy meeting and socialising with new people (as well as old travel friends of past) and listening to their travel stories and exchanging mine as well as creating our own!

I still like to go out and enjoy with a few ciders on the weekend(I’m from the west country of England-it's our weapon of choice) or whatever the local poison is???? Rakia anyone? But generally I try not to over-party anymore as it detracts me from my main purpose of travelling.

I love trying new food, the spicier the better (Thai/Mexican/Indian) and getting involved with the culture I'm experiencing and embracing it in it's social context. Locals= excitement!
I love cooking as well, I've done various cooking classes in India and Thailand and enjoy finding new recipes and ingredients on my travels.

I'm mad about my music, (SEE BELOW FOR LIST OF SOME) I love going to gigs and live music and I'll dance all night. I've been a music promoter in the past and occasionally get on the decks myself.

I'm a massive fan of running. I ran a few races in Korea last year and I'll prepare for the new season in March this year.
I love Judo, too. It actually got me interested in Asian culture as a teenager as the whole discipline gave me a new understanding to the world and use of the Japanese language was so interesting, I admired this at a young age. I still have my British roots though. I like football of course, I'm a supporter of Bristol City, who I admit aren't that great but I'm loyal to my local team rather than glory hunting. I will however support the local team whenever I go to a match overseas out of respect for the person who invited me along.

I take part in many extreme sports, I absolutely love skiing and I try to go at least 1-2 times a year. I like cycling, hiking (I do this frequently in Korea in Spring and Autumn), and I enjoy working out at my local Korean gym.

I really got into my photography of late and tend to take it a bit more seriously.

I'm always trying to learn Korean. It's a difficult subject but I'm giving it crack. I always try to speak as much Korean as possible when I'm out and about.

Overall, I would say I'm an energetic, active and open-minded kind of guy with a lot to say about the world in a non-argumentative way. I have a lot of respect for other peoples opinions. Everything in this world is certainly not just black or white.

Music, Movies, and Books

Indie/Rock'n'Roll/60's-80's mod, Northern Soul, Electro/Britpop plus anything that sounds upbeat that I can dance to! I recently got back into 80's music from when I was a child, like U2, New Order, The Smiths, Queen, the Stone Roses and so on.

My favourite band was Oasis as a teenager, along with the Beatles, Blur, Pulp and Suede.
10 years ago, I loved bands such as Bloc Party, The Kings of Leon, the Killers, Franz Ferdinand.....etc
These days, I listen to a wider scope of music but I still like bands such as Muse, Coldplay, the Vaccines, Vampire Weekend, Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds.
I attend the Busan International Film Festival each year, I've got more into foreign film recently and I was privileged to be in the audience for a live Quentin Tarantino interview that took place 2 years ago in Korea. I think the guy is a genius!
I love reading articles, travel journeys and historical books about all walks of life. So many that I don't even know where to start....?
I love reading about world news and keeping in touch with the rest of the world but I personally I'd rather experience it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There's just too many...

My one year working holiday in Australia (2005-06). The sand, the sea, the parties, the work, the people. I've never had so much fun in my life. Still living fondly in my memory today!

Doing to the Trans-Siberian railway across Russia and walking on a frozen Lake Baikal (the largest fresh water lake in the world) in Siberia at sunset. (2012) Unbelievably beautiful! Staying a in Ger (Yurt) with the nomadic tribes in Mongolia was incredible as well.

Coming to Korea and living here indefinitely. (2009-) It's made me an better all-rounded person and learned about things that one would never even imagine existed in a society!

JAPAN!!!! I love Japan so much!!! I've been there over 10 times now. I love the food, the culture, the politeness and warmth of the people, the nights out, the architecture, the great cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo, Fukuoka to name a few) the public baths (Onsen), the fashion, the technology, the sports, EVERYTHING!!!
Travelled to Myanmar this year. Wow, what a country. The food, the people, the bike madness in Mandalay. Began, words can't explain the beauty of the sunrise and sunsets there! Get there before it's ruined!

Teach, Learn, Share

I TEACH English at a public school in Korea.
I LEARN something new everyday living in Korea.
I would love to SHARE my experience with everyone!
