About Me

—'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?'
—'That is the only time a man can be brave,'
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Don't tell me something just works, tell me /how/ it works. Don't tell me "do it for me please, I can't do it myself", tell me "teach me how to do it, please".

'Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.'
Maimonides

I find curiosity the most important trait about humanity, it can lead to progress or it can lead us to failure; either way, there's always knowledge acquisition. I wish I had been born in an era where knowledge about common things was so scarce that people took everything for granted, my biggest ambition is to revolutionise the world through technology— although I'm an engineer, I plan to study Genetics as well. I often hear people say you can only be good at one thing in your life, but then I look back at people such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie, Aristotle, etc, etc— who decided to go beyond just one field in science & managed to succeed. Perhaps I will, too, perhaps I won't; whatever the outcome is, I will certainly know I tried.

"Curiosity killed the cat, but it died knowing."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Although I haven't begun my journey around the world, I figured the closest thing I could do before I have the time and the money to do so was either to sit here and wait for time to fast-forward or go out there and look for the rest of the world within Colombia.

My purpose here is to get to know cultures from all over the world and of course, share experiences with those who were kind enough to give Colombia a chance to fall in love with it. Sadly, I can't be a host but I'm hoping in a few years I can. Helping out people is what I like best, so I'm always up for showing people around, giving advice, or whatever is within my reach in order to help. You could say that I'm trying to change Colombia's stereotype one foreigner at a time.

Interests

I like diversity, I like doing things I've never done before & trying things I've never tried before— if not, how am I supposed to discover what's good and what's not?

I like specially those activities that have the word "challenge" all over themselves, be it physically or intellectually, I'm always willing to give it a chance. I believe people are scared of trying stuff because they might fail; but they don't realise that more often than not, the outcome isn't the most important part about it.

So basically: Wanna play chess? Sure. Wanna play soccer? Of course. Wanna go partying? Hell yeah. Wanna go hiking? Love it!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Hard to tell honestly, I don't have a favourite song or a favourite group, it always changes and I'm always falling for a new song or a new band; so one day I could like something such as The Vampire Weekend, and the next day I'm chillin' in bed just listening to Elvis Presley.

Movies: This one's easy, anything futuristic, utopian, dystopian or paranoid fiction. If the movie falls into any of those categories, I'm likely to enjoy it. The other genres for sure, but not as much. Also any movie that blows your mind and leaves you thinking at the end; specially those with ending left to various interpretations.

Books: Literally anything that's not politics or religion (sometimes even history), but I'm flexible depending on what. I do read about politics and religion but despise arguing about it. So give me a book and I'll probably read it even if I don't like it, there's more to literature than just a plot.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went climbing the Cocuy mountain last year ( I was really thrilled about touching snow since I had never had snow before ), we camped at around 4100 metres above sea level and the next day we climbed till we were around 4900 metres above sea level, I got to touch the snow and freeze my ass off.

I guess the most amazing thing I've done is learn a language by myself? I'm a self-taught person and enjoy learning stuff even when I don't have to do so. I'm always trying to memorize stuff or figure out how things work.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach Spanish/English, Colombian food and how to make 3D origami ( kusudamas, look them up ). I would love to learn German or Latin, and maybe how to cook really cool stuff.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can cook some stuff, enough not to starve but nothing too fancy. I can help with chores, I, personally, am untidy but when I'm at someone else's I try to be as organised as the day is long. So I'm cool with washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, cleaning the dust off, etc.

I can help with Spanish ( in case I'm at an English speaking country ), I've been complimented on many occasions for my patience and ability to clear out doubts.

I am also a good listener, I have the mentality of a daredevil, willing to face any situation and that includes being supportive of strangers. Sometimes a different perspective from a totally random person can help you figure out something so I can advice people on what to do or what they might do. I love being someone people can talk to when they're in trouble.
