About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To become the most interesting 80 year-old in the Old Folk's home.
ABOUT ME
I used to be a maths and philosophy teacher, but last year left to do a masters and as a result of that masters got a job here in SF (well, in San Mateo). Before that I ran a cocktail bar, worked for a charity and spent a year cycling in South America (not all at the same time).
PHILOSOPHY
Personal philosophy? I have some ideas about the nature of knowledge that rather go against the 2000 year-old consensus (it's okay, I know I'm wrong). I've learnt to make the most of the unexpected; usually it leads to something more interesting than you were planning. I think memories are more important than possessions, so would rather spent my money on travelling than things...
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Living in flatshares has made hosting difficult, but I'm always happy to show people around town.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I travel about 20% for the things I'll see, and 80% for the people I'll meet. Couchsurfing takes care of the 80%, and usually gives me some good suggestions for the 20% too!
Interests
Travelling, obviously. And cycling. Philosophy, maths, beer, meeting new people and drinking beer with them.
Music, Movies, and Books
Off the top of my head:
Films: the original Sleuth, Persepolis, El Secreto de Sus Ojos.
Music: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ali Farka Toure, Lucero, Josh Ritter, Paul Simon, Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Alexi Murdoch, Avett Brothers, PJ Harvey, lots and lots more...
Books: Grapes of Wrath, Master and Margarita, The Man Who Was Tuesday, Shantaram, and all those Malcolm Gladwell/Freakonomics things.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Sitting under the moon at Choquequirao, an Inca site that's the size of Machu Picchu but that's a 2-day hike from the nearest road and therefore deserted.
Teach, Learn, Share
If you want some maths teaching, I'm your man.
What I Can Share with Hosts
If you're an American, apparently the way I say 'yoghurt' is hilarious. Endless fun.
Countries I’ve Visited
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United States, Uruguay, Viet Nam
