About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To find someone in another part of the world who has the same name as me and/or looks just like me. And to remember everyone I met before that moment.

ABOUT ME

I like to think, and talk. I'm mostly comfortable making casual jokes, but I've spent plenty of nights engaged in philosophic discussion. I'm respectful of the beliefs and opinions of others as long as they're not harmful. I myself am harmless. Writing is the one creative outlet I'm good at, but I have a deep appreciation of all the arts. I frequently regret that I don't act on spontaneous urges, so sometimes I find myself standing up just because I realize that I can.

PHILOSOPHY

I always wish I had more quotes to follow. I quote a lot during conversations but never remember them as a personal philosophy. But, even if I remembered a quote, is that a "personal" philosophy? I guess my interpretation of the quote or a collection of quotes could constitute a personal philosophy. I say things that I consider deep all the time, but a lot of the time I attribute it to a character in a story inspired by what I said. Personally, I believe in life, and how it should be lived is a matter of choice. But our life is all we have. I'm proud of those who live their life for others, but sometimes it's much harder to understand yourself. I don't know if it's necessary, but it's at least interesting, and it's worth living life for yourself every once in a while.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'd be happy to accommodate someone on my couch, if you're really that interested in visiting Davis. I'm sure we could find some fun things to do.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've never had a surfer over, but I have plenty of experience sleeping on couches. :D Some of my favorite experiences are early morning conversations over coffee.

Interests

I'm interested in people. I frankly find communication amazing and I worry that it sometimes comes as a shock that there are other people in the world. I love to communicate, at times I have a gift for it, and I'm pleasantly overwhelmed by all the different experiences of others. I like to keep informed and my opinions can change at times, even if only for a moment of doubt. I like to think about possibilities, like the future of art or literature and my place in it. I like do-it-yourself projects but I stress over not having the tools to do them. I day-dream, and when I realize it I day-dream about day-dreaming.

Music, Movies, and Books

I thought I really loved movies, until I met some people who REALLY loved movies. My film knowledge and interest are above average and I don't really discriminate when it comes to genre, regions, or popularity. A good movie is a good movie. My favorites:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Living Wake
Trainspotting
Baseketball
Little Shop of Horrors
Before Sunrise

I'm more picky when it comes to music. Lately my playlist has been exclusively Irish music like Flogging Molly and similar bands. I'm also a long time fan of Big Band music, Frank Sinatra and the like. I like the emotion in the music termed "singer-songwriter" (although I have my doubts as to whether that can be considered a genre, since it only seems to describe music that is written and sung by the same person). But I have at least a similar philosophy as with movies: good music is good music. I can usually find a few songs in a given genre that I like.

I love to read when it's the right book. I enjoy classic literature and read a lot of it for school, but I'm much more interested in modern literature. Coincidentally, much of what I've been interested in lately has been foreign. I'm in the middle of The Savage Detectives by a late Chilean author, Roberto Bolano, and will be starting to read some more of the Scottish writer, Irvine Welsh.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Personally, being able to publish my writing has been amazing. I also once caught a pen in the air, overhand, after it fell from a desk. And I don't mean pulled it toward me where it was wedged between my hand and some surface, I mean I wrapped my fingers around the pen and put it back on the desk before I even realized what I did.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know how to juggle, but I'm not very skilled at it. I accidentally teach people idioms on a regular basis. I have a mental database of useless facts and can often link themes between ideas that don't seem to be similar (for instance, recalling a scene from a tv show for just about any situation). I want to learn how to make furniture out of wood. And idioms common in other parts of the world.
