About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring Parts Of The World No One Wants To See

ABOUT ME

I'm one of those people who travels not nearly enough and as such sometimes needs to live vicariously though the experiences of others. That said, I'm trying to fix that over the next little while. I'm into history and politics, and trying to learn to appreciate art better. I love good food (and can cook), trying new stuff, and just wandering aimlessly in places to see what I run into. I'm also developing a love of photography just a bit.

PHILOSOPHY

I figure that every day I'm around I have an obligation to do as much as I can with. And generally, I like that Golden Rule concept. I figure that I'm still around because people were nice to me and I have an obligation to do the same to others. Simple enough?

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm a would-be nomad, but unfortunately I didn't figure that out before taking on all manner of responsibilities and obligations and things that keep me from doing so. I do enjoy playing tour guide, and when I lived in Halifax my lofty plan was to actually go into that business doing just that.

I'm that guy who gives people directions in cities I don't even live in because I seem to have a knack for figuring them out quickly.

If I can't host you I'll still point you in the right direction for things to see and do and give you as much of a tour as I can. I'm working on persuading my lovely wife that couchsurfing is amazing and that hosting people is worthwhile.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Found out about Couchsurfing after meeting some people at a pub I used to frequent and thought it was an awesome concept. Then I used it to plan the most epic motorcycle adventure I've ever contemplated and connected with some of the most incredible people willing to take me in. Then I had to cancel the trip because of Hurricane Sandy.

I finally actually did my first surf not long ago, and the host I met, and another host in the area I met for breakfast were both great people.

I don't have anywhere to host people currently and I travel a whole lot, but I hope to change that very, very soon. I am, however, always interested in meeting people visiting where I am, and if I cannot give you a place to stay, I will happily try to give you at least a tour or point you in the right direction.

Music, Movies, and Books

I mostly read history books. Music - everything really. Movies? I watch them, but not especially significant.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There's actually a pretty long list of things that I can never remember. Seeing scarlet macaus flying over a pristine beach at Corcovado NP in Costa Rica as I approached by boat. Standing in front of the memorial at Dachau. Being awestruck by the beauty of the desert in Arizona. Walking into Petra at night.

Probably, though, the single most awesome thing I've ever done was take up skydiving. And the most awesome thing I've done doing that is jumping from a hot air balloon 6,000 feet above the Perris Valley in California. With my parents in the balloon.

Teach, Learn, Share

I don't know how interesting it is, but I can teach you a bit about Afghan history and what's happening there, because not many people know. I can be an awesome addition to your trivia team at the pub too, because I know so much useless information, it's kind of scary. And if you're looking for someone to talk you into making your first tandem skydive, well, I'm pretty good at that too.

What I Can Share with Hosts

A good conversation about just about anything, an amazing pub quiz trivia partner, a motorcycle ride if I've got my bike with me, stories at how badly I suck at skydiving (ask me how much metal is under the scar on my right ankle!).
