Sobre mí

I’m aware this profile is very detailed and I don’t expect a thorough read, but the option is there if you prefer :)

My upcoming adventure to the USA begins August 11 – first stop is a taste of San Francisco and Portland, then onward to gaze in amazement at my first total solar eclipse at Oregon Eclipse Festival, before heading to Nevada for my first Burning Man! I also plan to see the stunning national parks in the area, and possibly Colorado.

I'm a 30yo living in Australia and I love to explore, with a never-ending curiosity and a strong passion for all things science and life. I've always been driven to learn about our environment and universe, and my aims are to work in the fields of zoology, ecological management, conservation ethics, climate science, sustainability and animal welfare. I really like to find out what drives people or what is important to them, so I'll very likely ask you about your passions and what fascinates you, or the things you'd like to see change. It’s a wonderful thing to meet people from all corners and hear about their life and the experiences that shape their outlook and values; I believe the more we learn from diverse backgrounds, the greater capacity there is for compassion and communication. I’m open to learning about political climates or history and pretty much anything else, as I don't believe there are negative topics of discussion - rather I consider it a meaningful and positive thing to learn of and address issues that are generally easier to look away from.

I travel to discover hidden gems and absorb a deeper impression of the atmosphere and history or traditions of places I visit (not necessarily the popular tourist spots), and staying with locals is a special and insightful opportunity! I was introduced to couchsurfing in 2016 during my first solo travels through Europe and made several lasting connections, two of which have since visited me in Australia :) I’m flexible, independent, and would be happy to either venture out with you or keep to myself if preferred.

If I'm not already out dancing to my most loved artists until sunrise, my spare time is filled with flow arts, learning about the universe and its evolution, reading, cooking, photography, watching interesting tv series or docos, or trying to pick up a new skill like guitar or cosplay.

Although very interested in most circus and flow arts, I particularly enjoy fire spinning with poi and dragon staff and I tend to keep poi with me at all times. I also love to discover and be in awe of innovative technologies, and talented artists and performers.

Many other interests spring to mind - Existential philosophy and exploring consciousness or altered states like lucid dreaming, practising mindfulness and meditation, martial arts, photography/cinematography, music-arts-lifestyle festivals, camping and bush trekking, sci-fi and astronomy, anime, cosplay, reading, drawing, classic and Japanese cars ...and so much more in life!

My studies also covered many subjects of interest - astronomy, philosophy, evolutionary biology and ecology, genetics, population dynamics, marine biology, animal physiology-behaviour-communication, signal theory, biometry and statistics, wildlife management, conservation, restoration and ethics of human intervention, geology and plate tectonics, atmospheric science and climate change.

PHILOSOPHY
Too much to say, but despite a complex opinion of human intervention in nature, my perspective in a nutshell is ‘Biocentrism’ – the idea that humans are one species interconnected and co-existing with countless others, rather than being the centre of it all (opposite of anthropocentrism). I don’t believe in a deity; I just enjoy being in awe of my surroundings and practising gratitude for the wonders of life itself, and appreciating the fragility and uncertainty of existence… and knowing that knowledge is endless.
Ultimately, I want to want for less rather than the never-ending more, and to limit individual impact. I enjoy discussing sociology and psychology to come up with effective ways to create shared common views and goals that allow lasting and healthy positive change, in place of existing shared goals like wealth and status, which can drive destructive notions of ‘fulfillment’ and exponential consumption.

Feel free to tell me or ask anything you like - I'm a tad short on references as I've only couch-surfed 3 times, two of those being directly through the website. As your guest I would be considerate and respectful of space, and am more than happy to contribute to the experience in any way I can, whether it be chatting about existence, helping with housework, cooking and anything else to express my gratitude!

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

I recently completed my Masters degree in science and to celebrate I visited Europe, where I first tried couchsurfing and made some incredible lasting friendships. The few experiences I had and the people I met through couchsurfing were truly the highlight of my first solo adventure, and they formed my most valued memories. They also inspired me to become a host once I moved house in Australia. I feel so grateful to be in a position where I can travel and immerse myself in vastly different cultures, and although I have met countless wonderful people through hostels, I feel that couch-surfing has allowed for a more relaxed vibe and stronger connections. I hope to be able to provide an equally enriching and positive experience for those who welcome me into their home :)

Música, películas y libros

My sense of humour is rather vast and can also get pretty weird and off-chops. People-comedians-shows that get a loud chuckle from me include Broad city, Rick n morty, John Oliver, Jim Jefferies, Bill Hicks, Louis CK, George Carlin, southpark, monty python, scrubs, always sunny in philadelphia, malcolm in the middle, flight of the conchords etc.

Movies and TV series I most enjoy tend to explore sci-fi and futurism, astronomy/nature and spiritualism, existential philosophy and altered states of consciousness, Marvel and DC, psychology and societal structures, and martial arts choreography - some examples would be westworld, ghost in the shell, her, the expanse, firefly, doctor who, waking life, baraka and samsara, princess mononoke, akira, spirited away, elfen lied, requiem for a dream, fear and loathing in las vegas, donnie darko, daredevil, x-men, ong bak, aliens, game of thrones.

I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction books, especially those that explore evolutionary theory or offer creative perspectives on the history or future of social behaviour and structure: Nineteen-eighty-four, animal farm, sapiens: a brief history of humankind, origin of species, the selfish gene, the blind watchmaker, to kill a mockingbird, yhe things they carried.

I have fun sharing a love of music with others so I'll probably want to find out what makes you melt and what makes you dance :) I am definitely an audiophile who loves many different styles - dad brought me up on classic and acoustic rock and I developed a taste for alternative, rap, hip-hop and indie-rock. I have a huuuuge appreciation for unique/moving singing voices and for emotive music and interesting lyrics. In recent years I have also explored the electronic music realm, including psytrance, psy-dub, reggae, tech-funk, electro-swing, glitch-hop, ambient and chill etc. I have no interest in superficial pop/club/bangers type music....can't stand it personally.

Algo increíble que he hecho

It might not be the craziest adventure story, but during the past couple of years or so I've been on expeditions to discover new species of Australian Peacock Jumping Spiders, and have so far discovered 4 new species :D Contrary to what most people would think about most (if not all) spiders, these little natural wonders are actually stunningly beautiful!
Google them before you judge ;)
They are tiny and harmless, with outstanding colour vision, and the males have extraordinary iridescent colour patterns that reflect highly and change colour according to the angle of view. The males perform super crazy courtship dances in front of the females to win them over, just like birds of paradise!
My thesis research looked at some mystery behaviours in males, and discovered that they had evolved a specific leg-waving display to attract female attention, by pretending to be moving prey... sneaky males :P

No-one believes me when I say their dances are adorable, but hey they didn't become youtube sensations for no reason :P

Enseña, aprende, comparte

One of my favourite things to teach is poi! Poi originated in New Zealand, and is essentially a style of performance or flow art involving the spinning of two weighted 'ropes' (one in each hand) around the body in geometric patterns. It can be made of many different things (e.g fabric or long socks containing a weighted ball inside, or a string with an LED light on the end of it), and the range of patterns and styles that can be created is truly never-ending.
I love to teach this because it's fun, looks amazing, improves coordination and muscle memory, and is generally a really rewarding activity physically, cognitively and emotionally. Spinning poi to music is nothing short of meditative and therapeutic...

I've found that people are always left grinning once they've learned even one basic move, and giggle even when they make mistakes :)

Qué puedo ofrecer a los anfitriones

Happy and willing to share any household help or contribution towards meals (love to cook as well) and if the host is interested in chats I would most certainly love to talk about pretty much anything.... the weirder the better I say. I genuinely love to hear about what really drives people and what they simply can't ignore about their existence - so yes I will most likely ask you a lot about your passions in life - unless of course you're a host who wants to keep to themselves - as an introvert I'm down with that too :D
