About Me

Hello, I'm Nikolaj, welcome to my profile! ^_^

PLEASE NOTE: CURRENTLY I CAN ONLY HOST IN WEEKENDS

CURRENT MISSION

For now: having a good time with visitors, since I don't travel that much abroad currently. So instead I let the world come to me to give me a sense of the diversity of the people of the world.

ABOUT ME

I just moved into my own big two-room apartment (74 square meters)! I'm very pleased with it, and I feel that now I'm finally ready to host some couchsurfers and give them a good experience :)

I love being around people but I also need to be alone some times. I'm usually not the one who does most of the talking when I'm with people, mostly I like to listen to other peoples ideas and stories, but of course I also like contributing to a good conversation. There's a good quote from the Dalai Lama on this, saying that: "When you speak you only repeat what you already know, but when you listen you might learn something new."
I grew up in Aalborg (northern Jutland) but moved to Aarhus to study at the university, but after some time concluded that it was not my thing...

I really like sports, I went to a sportsschool before I began studying, and I eat almost exclusively vegan.

Now and then I write a song or a little piece of music. I play the guitar and also bought an electric piano though I must admit I don't play it very often.

PHILOSOPHY

Kindness to all living beings, which means at the very least, refraining from harming them. At best only imagination sets the limits :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I want to start out as a host, that way I let the world come to me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Met with Ze from London who was travelling with his mother. Showed them around and they gave dinner! We went playing volleyball down by the sea. Overall a really positive experience.

Hosted Adam from Israel for one night. We had a really good time at the Aarhus Festival (festuge).

Hosted Andrew from USA for one night.

Recently had some other good experiences, check my references :)

Interests

I'm a very much into spirituality (pacifism/non-violence, introspection, I have a statue of Jesus but I'm not religious in the traditional sense), music, doing sports (I don't follow sports on tv), I like sustainability which is a main reason I began studying energytechnology, and this also goes along well with my veganism since veganism is more sustainable than vegetarianism and especially meat-eating.

Music, Movies, and Books

I used to listen to music alllll the time (during the winter 2014/2015 I tracked my activity on spotify with last.fm and it showed that, on average, I heard 5-6 albums a day). Now that I study I don't have time to listen as much though. My favourite bands according to last.fm are:

X Contract (my friends band), Mew, Nick Drake, John Mayer, Kashmir, Emiliana Torrini, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Daft Punk, Spillemændene, Tinariwen, Sun Kil Moon, Bon Iver, Eddie Vedder, Kings of Convenience, Josh Rouse, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Fleet Foxes, Fiona Apple, Elof & Wamberg, Travis, Michael Kiwanuka, Daniel Johnston, Jack Johnson, Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams, Placebo, Joan As Police Woman, José González, Jens Lekman, Panamah, Thomas Dybdahl, Lou Reed, Tim Christensen, I Got You On Tape, City & Colour, The Libertines, Swan Lee, Pantera, Choir of Young Believers, Jonas Alaska, Noah & The Whale, Cat Stevens, Tobias Jesso Jr., Rage Against The Machine, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Modest Mouse, Teitur, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Michael Bublé, Devendra Banhart, Bob Dylan, Jørgen Leth, Beach House, Neil Young, Alessi Brothers, Snatam Kaur, Nena, Ocasiòn, Alice in Chains, Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars, Leonard Cohen, Beirut, Peter Sommer, Dire Straits. And the list goes on.

Movies I've seen (I don't remember them all so I'l list those on the IMDb top 250): Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Dark Knight, Pulp Fiction, Schindler's List, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Fight Club, Star Wars movies, Forrest Gump, (part of) Inception, Goodfellas, The Matrix, Se7en, The Usual Suspects, The Silence of the Lamps, Leon: The Professional, Life Is Beautiful, American History X, The Intouchables, The Green Mile, Memento, The Pianist, Gladiator... also I really liked Dancer In The Dark and Babel... Also the intouchables and Slumdog Millionaire, Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society.

I don't own that many books and I don't always finish them. But on my bookshelf I've got dictionaries, an un-opened Bhagavad-gita (actually I don't have it anymore since I gave it to a friend), a danish rhyming dictionary, the bible (with Old Testament Apocryphals, from when I studied religion at the university), a couple of philosophy/religion-lexicons, A book about a couple travelling through Afrika on motorcycles with their kids (very cool), some Plato-stuff, a couple of vegan recipe-books/nutrition, a book about sleeping outside when traveling in Denmark, some danish fiction, a danish coaching book called "Viljen til sejr" (Will to Victory), a Neale Donald Walsch book (Conversations with God 1), Ind i Musikken (Into the music, kind of a mystical book trying to capture and describe the essence of music), Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche, some books on thermodynamics and energytechnology.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Seeing the great pyramid of Cheops of the Giza plateau from within was definately a win.
Diving in Thailand and Borneo.
Climbing Mt Kinabalu on Borneo, being too fast and thereby too early for the sunrise, so we had to wait a long time in the freezing cold hehe.
Writing, performing and producing my own songs at my previous school.

Teach, Learn, Share

Playing the guitar, something very basic about music production.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Hungary, Italy, Malaysia, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In

Denmark
