ABOUT ME

I'm not a cool person I think. I'm not very good at being nonchalant. A lot of things matter to me. Insignificant little things that no one else usually thinks twice about tend to fascinate me or move me or make me laugh.

Kundera has this idea of a poetic memory, which records everything that charms or touches us, that makes our lives beautiful. I put a lot of things in that. I'm a bit of an idealist at heart - not in the sense of being an optimist exactly - but in that I have a penchant for glimpses of abstract nouns in action - love, joy, intimacy, compassion, authenticity, solidarity, respect.

I love those moments when you connect with something outside yourself and become completely absorbed in it, a sensation, a detail, an image, another person's perspective. I'm looking for more of those moments. I like interactions in which there are no walls, when you can be unguarded and authentic and open. A friend of mine used to talk about the "uncensored beauty of people's souls" and I guess my favourite moments are when I see flashes of that. For me, that's what makes life meaningful. I like to love people, I like people to feel free around me. I like to do what I can for people and I like to play.

I've hosted a fair few couch surfers, and I'd like to think I made them feel at home.

Intereses

Having conversations about human nature, society, philosophy, psychology, politics, language, art, or just whatever people care enough to talk deeply about. You can even talk to me about code and machine learning, if you are willing to talk really slowly. Really slowly.

I've studied holistic massage and love giving massages. I love to cook. I like to dance. I'm attempting to learn to belly dance (badly). I paint and draw when I get the chance and feel inspired.

Music:

Bob Dylan is a genius.

I love Joni Mitchell, and some Joan Baez or Joan Armatrading or Silvio Rodriguez is always nice. I like a lot of folk and I'm woefully uniformed about the music the kids are into these days.

I love Latin and Caribbean music to dance to and I always appreciate a bit of Reggae or some Juan Luis Guerra.

Oh, and I do enjoy listening to some really bad cheesy music as well. I know its awful, but it just makes me happy.
