About Me

PERSONAL REQUESTS ONLY: All copy/pasted requests will be politely declined. Please read this entire profile, including the next page with the home/couch description, before deciding to submit a couch request. Thanks!

ULTRALIGHT TRAVELERS: You are my people! If you're on a long trip with a small day pack and nothing more, come visit. I want to meet you! Being light on your feet is priceless, and less is more. :)

ABOUT ME: I am a pilot, an improviser, a teacher, a skier, and an adventurer. I love hiking long and short distances, running on trails, playing with dogs on the beach, walking at night in the rain, paddling between islands, playing games like Code Names and Carcassonne and Spyfall, and connecting genuinely with people like you. I tend not to be excited about things like drinking, drugs, television, and popular culture.

CHANGE IN PROGRESS: I have a new home on 5 beautiful acres of land in Langley, Washington. If you stay with me, there's a good chance that we'll be commuting to/from the island by seaside train and ferryboat. On some nights, we might be on my sailboat in the city, as described in my current profile. For the moment, there's a lot of newness and there may be moving-related projects and gardening in the works. If you love quiet beautiful places with trees and birds, this is a dream couch! If you love gardening, you're welcome to help! But, for now, please do NOT request to stay with me if you have evening plans in the city.

ADVENTURE COUCH: If you love spending days in the wilderness, playing board games, sharing delicious healthy food, and connecting with real people in person, we'll have a great time.

WORK VISITS OK: If you're coming town to do some work, or if you're here to interview for a job in Downtown Seattle, that's cool with me.

WHY NOT? If you require TV where you are staying, if you're here for a concert or a wedding, of if you plan on going out drinking at night, this couch is not a good fit. Please find another host.

COUCHSURFERS ONLY: If you're traveling with adult humans who don't have CouchSurfing profiles, please be advised that I do not host non-CouchSurfers. If you want to bring your friends and they're not yet members, please invite them to sign up! Include links to their profiles if you're sending a request on behalf of a group. Of course, your kids and your dogs don't need to have separate profiles. :-)

Music, Movies, and Books

These books are rich in truth about what it means to be human:
Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts
Endurance, about the Shackleton expedition
The Miracle of Mindfulness, by Thich Nhat Hanh

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Learning to fly. Visiting a village in India that had never before seen a foreigner. The Alaska Highway in winter. Being licked by a tiger.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can show you the wilderness, possibly take you flying, offer Pacific Northwest transit/travel tips, and show you how to make an ultra-lightweight portable stove out of used beverage cans... and I'd love to learn anything that you're passionate about and willing to teach!

What I Can Share with Hosts

If you let me, I'll cook dinner and wash your dishes. Seriously.

Congratulations, gentle reader. You have made it this far! But, you're not done yet. Be sure to look at the next page too: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/northernflights/couch
