About Me

CURRENT MISSION

We will begin a year of travel in August 2015. We look forward to making friends and experiencing culture and community through the eyes of our hosts.
We are particularly interested in education, outdoor adventures, music, food, and social justice issues.

ABOUT US

Both Dennis and Trish grew up in Michigan, but met in Oakland, California. We are outgoing folks eager to explore and learn.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I started my independent travel quest when I was 19 when I spent 5 months traveling by bicycle through the British Isles. Since then, I have been fortunate to venture to many places, make great friends, and learn about both the world and myself.

Teach, Learn, Share

"The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teaches. They become jointly responsible for a process in which all grow." ~ Paulo Freire, from _Pedagogy of the Oppressed_

What I Can Share with Hosts

We both work, so we usually can't share in sight seeing, although sometimes a weekend or holiday visit can include some adventures. We know the area well and are happy to point you to places specific to your interests (often off the tourist circuit.)

Dennis works in an urban middle school and welcomes travelers to spend a morning visiting our school. (We have student tour guides who love to show visitors around!)

We enjoy seeing live music (and have a good independent music venue walking distance from our home). We are also runners, and welcome you to join us for a run on local streets or on trails up in the East Bay Hills.

Finally, we love to share our kitchen. Prioritizing time for dinners together is important to us. We enjoy cooking for guests and we LOVE it when guests take over our kitchen and make a meal for us! (This is a great way to say "thanks for hosting"!)
