About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Be nice, be funny, be useful

ABOUT ME

Well.. Presently I'm a non-practicing biologist who worked in South Texas as a sea turtle saver and is currently living outside of Yosemite. I'm a once-vegetarian who was enticed back to the flock with bacon, but may go back to the dark side someday. I'm a dog person who happens by circumstance to own a cat, but we seem to like each other and we get along fine.

I read a fair bit and I like to fancy myself a musician, but in a meditative way mainly. I'm pretty shy in front of crowds with a piano or a guitar so it takes me awhile to warm up to somebody enough to play in front of them. I'm fond of stupid jokes. I really like books and movies with a surreal slant to them, my favorite food is ice cream, and my favorite president is Thomas Jefferson. I've never met a celebrity, but I think I once saw Bill Nye on a bicycle.

PHILOSOPHY

Relax to the max, live and let live, and other such wide-sweeping and well-meaning aphorisms. I will tell you that you can't pick your friend's nose, not only out of social taboo but simply because it's logistically impossible.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I can tell a damn good whale joke :). I like to chat and was once employed as a dishwasher (hint hint).

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far I've only hosted, but all of the people I've met have been fascinating adventurers who I was happy to spend time with, and who left me with the sense of having gained from our shared experience.

Interests

The outdoors, animals, music, far-leftist politics, coffee and doughnuts, candy on Halloween (I'm going as Van Gogh this year,) baked goods, new frontiers.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like whimsical, artsy-fartsy but still simple movies: Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, Annie Hall, Midnight in Paris, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle (et al Miyazaki) Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums (and all other Wes Anderson movies) etc.

Music - David Bowie, Radiohead, Bob Dylan The Fleet Foxes, First Aid Kit, Beck, The Beatles, The White Stripes (and other Jack White projects) the Shins, The Decemberists and soforth.

Books - Reading Another Roadside Attraction, liked Norwegian Wood, Catch-22, A Clockwork Orange, lots of Steinbeck, Blood Meridian, The Hobbit.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My girlfriend and I just fought off a mountain lion in Yosemite. Outside of that, I'd say passing O-chem was pretty cool.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can play the piano and the guitar, and I really want to learn how to rock climb =)
