I've hosted lots of great people. And enjoyed chatting with a few via phone and internet, too.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I became a member when I was in Ireland and emailed a member there, who ended up letting me take care of his place out in the country for 10 days while he went to France. It was really great.

Family, BOOKS!, writing--especially long letters to people I care about--painting, sculpting, gardening, walking, dreams, reading, yoga, thinking really hard about things that end up being very simple (this is a bit of a bad habit, at times.) Eating really good food. Making really good food and sharing it with people. Having genuine connections with people, whatever forms they may take. Being outside. Exploring.

I love books. Having lived outside of the US for almost two years, they have become even more of an essential element in my life . . . a way of connecting with people, ideas, places when that type of closeness can otherwise be difficult to create or find. (Facebook just doesn't quite do it.) I'll read just about anything that is somewhat intelligently written. Some favorite writers include John Steinbeck, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Dave Eggers, Miranda July, David Foster Wallace, Wallace Stegner, Paul Auster. All kinds of music. Nina Simone and Sigur Ros and Maria Callas. Lykke Li, Elvis, Peggy Lee, Chavela Vargas, Cat Power, James Brown . . . Anything with soul, but the fluffier stuff has it's place, too!
