There are only 5 hosts in Prague hosting more than 25 surfers a year. You just stumbled upon one.
I am dedicated, but: Please don't expect too much. Remember: It is Couchsurfing and not Airbnb for free. Expect to be showered with tips and events fitting to your interests. Concerts. Picnics. Cooking, together. Student vibes. Hidden rooms in Prague which I can open for you. Expect total privacy. Space for yourself, for as long as you need it. Deepest respect. Empathy. Expect a lot of curiosity into your life and culture. Expect long talks. Expect me to listen. To your life story. And ...expect a cold winter here right now.
Reading my profile might take a bit of your time,
but since you're asking for some of mine
I'd say it's fair.

In love with "Creative Couchsurfing": I'm the initiator of some unusual Couchsurfing community events. Free, official events โ for a few Couchsurfers. Events to give back something uniquely to the global Prague visiting CS community. With fairy tale like experiences. In Prague.
We were basically living ...dreams. In 2023, all year long:
โ
โ โโWith Couchsurfing guests we...
โ โโ...were swimming in Vltava river
โ โโ...had morning breakfast on (yes, on)
โ โโโโworld famous Charles Bridge
โ โโ...tasted the oldest monastic beers in
โ โโโโthe country (9. century) with monks
โ โโ...danced salsa on Old Town Square
โ โโโโat 2amโunder the full moon
โ โโ...bathed inside the Prague Castle
โ โโโโcompoundโaloneโat night
โ โโ...and protested for peace. I believe
โ โโโโwe can make our world a bit better
โ
โ
And these are my public events for 2024 (public = open to a few non-guests):
โคโ "Castle Alone: Mission Impossible" โ You can come with me inside Prague Castle at night when the complex is closed to the public. The largest ancient Castle compound in the Worldโaloneโfor a few selected Couchsurfers.
โคโ "Morning Picnic" โ Private picnic with 360ยฐ views: Prague rooftop and Castle panorama. As a true Couchsurfing cultural exchange: Everybody sharing their favourite food.
โคโ "Blue Moon" โ Ancient city walk at Full Moon ...and a night picnic at Prague Castle.
โคโ "Scream" โ Scary ...one of Europe's spookiest spots. Just one tombstone, all others: stolen... The assassinator of archduke Franz Ferdinand is buried in this abandoned graveyard. This assassination lead to the start of World War I in 1914. Milos Forman filmed "Amadeus" there, 1984. UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher came 1996, in total secrecy. She exhumed one skeleton. We'll have red wine there.
โคโ "Rooftop Prague" โ Chill-out party on a roof or just wine-tasting above the city at sunset.
โคโ "Night Crawl" โ Exploration through spiritual, dark and alchemist Prague. To end ...a morning restaurant visit at 4am โ meeting homeless, night workers, party animals and the sleepless?
โคโ "Mabon" โ Autumnal Solar Equinox celebration on a Prague island โ at the moment when our sun is crossing the equator.
โคโ "Castle Garden Brunch" โ Enjoy a free royal-yet-poor picnic (everyone brings own food to share) inside a lonely forgotten historical Castle garden.
โคโ "A bit Wild in Prague" โ Let's get ...silly? ...creative? Wanna try to throw an ๐ช ? Like to go swimming ...at night? Standup paddle boarding at dawn? Karaoke? Paint? More fun ideas?
โ
โ(ยฐ.ยฐ)โ If you like to do anything innovative when you visit Prague, say ...you are an architect and wanna do Urbex, climbing stalinist ruins? If your idea is interesting, why not create an event together? You can discover a creative, magical place in our world, in just a few days: Prague.

and to all Latin American countries. Even the arty new US-vibe I experienced. No, I am just a normal human, not perfect. But what a global journey this here was... no, ...still is:

I believe in ...the beauty of all cultures
I believe in ...sharing and helping
I believe in ...you

โบ "โ H i โe v e r y o n e โ! โ"
A confession: โIf I am hosting Couchsurfers ...here you find a heart and home for artists. Globetrotters. Hitchhikers. Bikers. Backpackers who travel rough. Cool vibes. Just mention places like New Orleans, Hong Kong, Asia or Latin America and my inner soul jumps. That's why I host. That's why I travel.
I learned to love the Couchsurfing cultural exchange experience. Sometimes I matched 2 to 4 different guests, from different cultures at the same time. This house then turns into a creative Couchsurfing community center in Prague. Unique here (see โ references for my guests views on this experience.)
Over 100 Couchsurfers within just one year โ discovering Prague together, discovering creative "worlds", different to mine: Explorers who circle the globe for years, Iranian revolutionaries, Latin American feminists, admirable strong solo adventurers, party-animals, war victims, bloggers, marathon runners, digital nomads, eccentrics, free spirits.
And I shared, with full hands. Questions. Insights. Empathy. I try to avoid the global mainstream. Experienced unexpected life-altering moments hosting. Changed, a bit, as I learned from guests: started volunteering, helping the disadvantaged.
And I love to explore. Visited so many off-track places in Prague. I have a "hidden gems" list with hundreds of still unchecked places here. If you like we can discover a few of them together, fitting to your interests.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ โ โ โโ โโ โผ
That is all: it is that simple. That is why...we do fit.
That's why ...I might not be the right host for you.
Especially... if the place counts and not your host.
Trust references on Couchsurfing. Maybe the one of many (positive) reference to read is from a "1-day-stay" tourist โ tired from an overloaded journey, looking for a calm place to rest.
"I wouldnโt recommend staying with Oli to everyone. However, if your personality is a fitโstaying with him is a great experience!" โ Kirsty, South Africa๐ฟ๐ฆ (22 y/o, new to CS)
โ
๐ฑ
โ
I love to dive deeper. I am asking questions, like:
โ โWhat is empathy in our digital world?
โ โWhat makes us really happy when traveling?
โ โWhere would I like to travel next?
โ โWhat exploring adventure would you like?
โ โWhat makes you tick, in your life?
โ
โ โโ โ" Chase chaos with me. "
โ โโ โโ โ a guest to me
โ โโ โ" I love the unknown. "
โ โโ โโ โ me to the guest
โ
Memorable sentence from one of my Couchsurfers:
"Oli, I'm glad my mom bought me travel insurance."
โ
โ
๐ NGO volunteering:
Besides my Couchsurfing lifestyle I also do volunteer for a charity NGO helping locals in need. Here in Prague.
If you like I can offer you a life-changing authentic local experience: You could share your empathy ...you giving out food (together with me, no language skills needed) to homeless people in Prague. It is just an option, an open invitation.
Experience two hours
โโโ โwhich you may remember
โโโ โโโโ โ... for the rest of your life.

The "experience" (do have a look at "our" photos) ...anything creative, including: ...a picnic in nature above Prague ...cooking our favourite simple meals ...a free concert ...karaoke together ...student life ...or boating on a small boat around the green islands next to Charles Bridge?
I love to connect. I have many questions about your country, culture, your life:
Why do we travel? Why are we different? Why similar? What is life? Family? Age? Happiness?
โ
๐ญ โ" Hey... I bet I like you... I just haven't met you yet! "
โ
โ
I believe our experiences shape our destiny and connecting with others is a beautiful way to learn more. I am often amazed where you live. I offer a listening ear as I would love to know about your journey on this fragile spinning ball, our earth.
I like exploring Prague together, with Couchsurfers, that's why I host. Climbed a rooftop in the snow with a -now friend- from Saudi Arabia. Went to a gay club with female CS guests from Iran (they asked for it.)
Maybe ignore your tripadvisor or influencer's 'best of' tourists-tips. In life great moments mostly are not buyable. Once spots are popular they loose their sparkle.
โ โโโ Do not follow where the path may lead.
โ โโ โGo instead where there is no path
โ โโ โand leave a trail. โ
โ โโ โโ Muriel Strode
The more unusual you are, entering my small world here, the more I could learn from you. And maybe we'll leave a small new trail!? It is fun, you can read about it in some of my guests โ references.
โ
โ
L O V E โ Guests which I matched for the first time at my Couchsurfing events even fell in love:
"Hey Oli โ been a while since we talked but I wanted to say thanks again for hosting that night in Prague Castle over the summer. I especially wanted to thank you because without that event I wouldnโt have met Jess (the Australian lawyer). We ended up traveling together for a month after and weโre dating now and have been traveling together since." โ Robert, USA
โ
โ
I die for unexpected surreal situations like:
....having a picnic with a hijabi CSer being surrounded by white sheep, Prague Castle view included.... Or having a very simple historical meal inside a monastery, with monks chanting.... "Ship-wrecked" with a Colombian on a rowing boat next to Charles Bridge.... Or a subway ticket inspection control ("...trust me: at 9pm nobody will check us").... Thrift shopping a white wedding dress with a Couchsurfing couple in love.... A Japanese performing the traditional Sakura cherry blossoms dance in my kitchen.... A Rap singer giving a live wild "living room" concert... Or just watching the moon rise above Prague and finding an abandoned ๐heart-shaped red balloon at the castle.

My mom is from a former artistic family, it formed me: I love Art. Creativity. Deepness. Culture. Soul. Heritage. Stunned by the family closeness of my Latin American Couchsurfers โ I sometimes met their whole family back home via video call.

Horrified about todays illusionary fake Instagram culture, endless superfast TikTok clips and our excessive decadent consumerism.

Childhood at the ocean (Baltic Sea) in a German-Danish village. Technically Germany, 10km away from the Danish border but from mentality and values it was more Scandinavia. I realised only later on in my life how much childhood forms your personality.
I've been sailing since I was 9 years old. Love to meditate in nature. Like to talk to the full moon ๐
Try to look up to the sky at least once every day, most people usually rarely ever look up. They all just look straight. It limits your horizon.
Look up and you feel the full energy of the universe:

I love animals ๐พ . Nature. Life. Oceans. Wind. Waves. Love our fragile planet.
Lived in 10 countries (traveled 33). Home is gladly (and maybe sadly, too) where I live. Plan to live (part time on/off) in South America and in Indonesia in the near future. Started jogging, couchsurfing sports students and a 61 years old couchsurfing marathon runner motivated me.
Was successful in life beyond my wildest dreams. Also was a huge failure. Always tried to be honest and fair. Have many interests, usually I instantly find sparkling connection points with anybody interesting I meet.
If I would have to describe myself in one single word, I'd like to choose: โreliable
I would like to be remembered as the one of the few "old style gentlemen" you may ever meet in your entire life. Honest, fair, respectful, capable. Does ...that ...sound ...a bit silly?

Couchsurfing experienced in the original spirit still is magical:
A )โ If you can't visit all the world, you're able to meet beautiful creatives from all over the world.
B )โ Couchsurfing remains amazing in a cold capitalistic world.
C )โ I am still addicted to living "new memories" and exploring "your world":
Where else do you really meet and host a marathon runner, a professional New York basketball athlete, a psychologist, an art philosopher, a video artist, a deep sea diver, a hacker and a rap singer ...all within just weeks? From countries like Saudi Arabia, Colombia and Papua New Guinea?
And could experience "cool things" with unique wonderful humans? Live (1-on-1, this is not Netflix), cultural problems / differences and many surprises included? Where else can you get this insane global horizon?
D )โ To share (we both give and we get):
. . . a mystical city. You can time travel to "Paris of the East". Back in time. Avoiding tourists.
. . . a large home with a lot of private space for yourself.

One Couchsurfing member was writing ". . . this question is why I hate the internet."
Another CSer wrote: "I was born."
I never swam with pink dolphins, did not ride an elephant, never swam the Amazon river, did no Shark-diving, did not fight in a war, did not fish Piraรฑas, did not hike the Great Wall of China, no glacier hiking neither, did not dress up as a penguin or climbed waterfalls in the jungle... (all these things other Couchsurfers left in their profiles.)
One wrote: "At the age of 16 I walked through the entire Cambodia, as an 18-year-old I climbed Kilimanjaro and traveled across Peru, where I slept in a hammock while wandering around the Amazon Forrest."

Compared to that (if you take it all at face value) my world looks banal. And calmโespecially when I think of all our current wars. Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Taiwan endangered?
โ(ยฐ.ยฐ)โ
On the other hand life itself can be exciting: I almost killed myself windsurfing once (I was 16) drifting offshore in cold water, between Denmark and Germany, knowing I will almost for sure die now.
I endangered my life in a small sailboat hitting the cliff of a lonely Kornati island in Croatia.
And in Summer 2022 a gigantic brutal wild firewall hit the holiday house in Greece. A fire-fighting helicopter came to rescue.
But all these (character-building) events happened TO me, it is nothing you ever plan to experience.

. . . a puzzling thought: Why do (almost) no CS profiles mention Climate Change โ being kind to our planet?

P r i c e l e s s .
Fringe benefits of "learning through Couchsurfing":
Know now where to shop Colombian, Peruvian, Brazilian, Italian, Vietnamese, Japanese food in Prague... And the best Falafel... Discovered cool thrift shops (one guest even got her wedding dress) ...Farmers Markets and Handmade Jewelry... Was riding Paternosters ("elevator of death") in town... Climbed into an overlooked Stalinist ruin with an architect... Went rowing on the river... Watched outdoor and rooftop cinema... Enjoyed free concerts... Discovered city roofs... Met local Police... Celebrated Couchsurfers birthdays together... Tasted delicious food from around the world at home... Cried together (a lot)... Laughed together (even more)

Sharing (the core of Couchsurfing):
โ T i m e . There is nothing more valuable than our lifetime
โ My heart and real friendship
โ Objects, I share almost everything I own:
Washing machine โ Wine or healthy Tea โ Kitchen โ Towels โ Green Terrace โ Kayak
Almost everything . . .
I even did share my favourite clothes:
A couchsurfer from Saudi Arabia loved my warm skiing gloves ...a rap singer from Denmark enjoyed my socks ...my second hand leather jacket found several friends ...a Japanese went wild wearing my Yoko Ono sunglasses ...an Australian fit into my favourite sweater ...my scarf helped quite a few in the cold to survive ...and even my favourite torn jeans found a new part time fan. Not that any of this was ever planned.
Couchsurfing is sharing.
And ...aah, this you get too:โ

Otherwise: It depends on your needs (warning: I am a hopeless cook, but I try). Especially interested in South America (I offer real Colombian ๐จ๐ด hot chocolate and homemade Arepas) and in Asia. Favourite fashion designer: Yohji Yamamoto. A Japanese guest said to me: "Who is he?" ...then looked at his iPhone: "...ahhh, he is really famous: ...on wikipedia". A legal note: All following tips are purely private and uncommercial. I have no financial connection to any business recommended. I do not work in tourism. I got no commission or any benefits from anybody in tourism in Prague ever. All tips are based on my own real experiences. If my guests like a venueโthen I have the legal right to voice these private opinions here publicly: as tips for other travelers. I do not sell anything. None of my recommendations are an advertisement or sponsored. I know the concept of 80 Tips for Couchsurfers in a profile is an unusual idea and my profile even got reported for this, but it represents real Couchsurfing spirit (especially here in the "what I can share..." category): locals giving local advice to Couchsurfers.
โช A few unusual โ Coffeehouses / Cafรฉs:
โ Dos Mundos (Prague hipster Cafรฉ with swings instead of chairs) โ Dobra Trafika (Secret entry Cafรฉ, it looks like a banal newspaper stand, just try to find the hidden entry) โ DOX Modern Art Museum Cafรฉ, rooftop under the Zeppelin Airship โ Rudolfinum (Prague's "temple of music") Concert Cafรฉ inside the stunning historical 1885 Rudolfinum โ Cafรฉ Pod Lipami, it could be in Berlin Kreuzberg โ Cafรฉ Jericho, full of cool smart students โ Slagr Cafรฉ for a real time travel back to the 1920s โ Pool Cafรฉ at โ Kasarna Karlin, the Pool Cafรฉ is placed inside a historical swimming pool
โช A few good cheaper๐ดRestaurants in Old Town:
โ Zakladna in Pragues famous Night-Life street Dlouha (modern traditional Czech meals, bistro/sports-bar like, always popular with younger locals) โ Kantyna (200m south of main train station) in a former historical Bank (choose amounts and pay at exit in a simplistic steak-bistro: meaty, grilled on open fire, heavy, great quality, fair price, no reservations. Secret tip: dry-aged beef burger, could be the best in town, 15mins preparation time, to order only in the entry room for Euro 10) and nearby: โ Spejle for small but great Czech "bites" (Czech version of "tapas", very popular: reservation advisable) โ "Lokal" (buzzling, popular with local young beer-drinking traditionalists: 5x in Prague, mainly heavy real Czech sauce drowning meaty dishes). For the price at a fast food place you get a full authentic Czech meal at โ "Havelska Koruna" (located just 2mins south of Wenceslas Square)

Mikulase, build 1755 โ Visit the Klementinum with the stunning ancient National Library and the โ 13th century Gothic Convent of St. Agnes in Prague Old Town, founded 1230. James Bond "Casino Royale" was filmed at โ Strahov Monastery inside the Library (close to Prague Castle) founded 1143 and visit its out-of-the-world breathtaking โ Theological Hall from 1671. The hall and library regularly appear on the list of places that you should visit at least once in your life

โช 5 Unique Subway Metro Stations
โ Europes longest Elevator (by far) you find at Metro Namesti Miru: build 1978, 87m long, 533 steps. You travel 53 meters deep underground. โ Pure decaying 1984s dire communism great for insta-shots at Metro Vltavska. โ Bombastic brown marble Soviet design, made by Soviet architects from Moscow 1985 as a gift of "friendship" is Metro Angel. โ Wonderful Stalinist architecture at Metro Mustek. โ Baroque Sandstone Sculptures of Venus, Elpis, Mercury at Metro Malostranska. Non-touristic: Visit some of the best secondhand shops, coffeehouses, bistros or burger joints which serve world-class burgers (also veggie burgers) like in New York.
โ 3 Famous Celebrity Homes in Prague: โโช Albert Einstein lived at: Lesnicka 7 โโช Johannes Keppler at: Karlova 4 โโช Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at: Bertramka
โ Graveyard of the Rich and Famous: Vaclav Havel and writers, artists, actors you can meet within the beautiful peaceful Olsany Cemetery Park with St. Wenceslaw church at its heart. You feel energy and a touching real aura of history (at Metro Station Flora.)
โ Alchemy โ Prague has a rich historical background in alchemy, and there are several ways you can explore its history: โโช Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Pragueโโช Charles University (est.1348) has a long history of scientific pursuits, including alchemy. You can explore the university's buildings and libraries, and learn about its connections to alchemists and their studiesโโช Prague Astronomical Clock and Prague Castle have connections to alchemyโโช Dedicated walking toursโโช Research: Delve into books, articles, and online resources to learn more about the history of alchemy in Prague. Look for works by authors like Elias Ashmole, Michael Maier, or Manly P. Hall, who have written about alchemy and its connections to Prague.
โ ๐ถ โFree concerts . . . ! โPrague offers several locations where you can enjoy free concerts. Here are some popular options: โโช In 2024 there is a free concert stage on "Strelecky Island". Live popular concerts almost every day in the afternoon, often Czech pop. Great beer garden and coffee shop. Wonderful vibe. The island is located just 400m south of Charles Bridge, easy to reach by foot. โช Old Town Square: free concerts during festive seasons like Christmas and New Year. โโช Prague Castle: Prague Castle occasionally hosts free concerts in its courtyards or gardens. While entry to certain parts of the castle complex may require a ticket, keep an eye out for open-air performances that are accessible to the public. โโช St. Nicholas Church: Located in the Lesser Town, St. Nicholas Church hosts regular classical music concerts, and some of them free of charge. โโช Kampa Park: Kampa Park, situated on the banks of the Vltava River, often hosts open-air concerts during the summer months, typically free to attend. โโช Wallenstein Garden: The Wallenstein Garden, near Prague Castle, is a beautiful setting for outdoor concerts. Occasionally, the garden hosts free classical music performances during the summer season (about 5-7 quality symphonic concerts every month during summer). โโช Municipal Halls and Cultural Centers: Prague's municipal halls and cultural centers occasionally organise free concerts and music events. Check the schedules. โโช Additionally, keep an eye on local event listings, websites and social media platforms for announcements about free concerts happening in the city.
โ Check online for the many outdoor Open Air Summer Cinema screenings: Alternative cinemas in Prague are great, popular, young and full of cinema-history, inexpensive and well curated.
โ When you are at Prague Old Town Square, go to the main tourist information office (historical entrance to old town hall directly next to the famous Astronomical Clock and then in the magnificent entry hall take the first door left. They hide the office, there are no signs "...the best things in life you have to find yourself"). Ask for your free uncommercial โ "Use-it Map". It is not just a map but maybe the best guide to Prague: done by young locals, full of skilfully curated up-to-date insider tips, without any commercial intentions.
โ Tourist Traps/Mistakes . . . ! โโช Avoid most restaurants on the main tourist paths. They may not be as good as their prices suggest. Turn a corner, you find a place with better food and prices. Look for inexpensive mid-day "lunch menus". โโช A bistro is cheaper than a restaurant. โโช Prague has a fantastic coffeehouse culture: Desserts best enjoy in cafรฉs, not in your restaurant after your meal: cheaper, usually better and you change the ambience. โโช Never order "A beer, please!" You then may get the most expensive "tourist beer". Ask for the beer list or for a recommendation. โโช Prepare for your trip to Prague with good tips and search cafรฉs and restaurants you may like beforehand. โโช Don't use street taxis, use services like Bolt or Uber. โโช If you want to discover non-touristy "Real Prague" don't rely too much on Tripadvisor or Google rankings: All Prague City centre ratings are mainly from tourists, not by local insiders (5-stars can mean: purely touristic and too expensive). In Prague Centre expensive does not equal quality. โโช Try to avoid Mini Markets, if you want to save. โโช Buy a 24 hours public transport ticket for 120kc (Euro 5 - can be payed by Credit Card), avoid the 1000kc fine. โโช Prague has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe, lower than Sweden. Especially women feel safe and free here, even at night. Night transport is 100% safe. Just be aware of few pickpockets in touristic hotspots like Charles Bridge, inside trams, in the subway or Xmas markets. Always pay to store your wardrobe in clubs. Watch out for sometimes wrongly returned change money in touristic places. โโช Alcohol is very cheap in Prague, quality beer is priced like water. Enjoy responsibly, don't get too drunk. โโช Don't even think of riding a bike inside Prague Centre. Walk and use trams! โโช Don't jump from a bridge. โโช Free Wifi is still patchy in the center, there are only about 200 free hotspots. Activate mobile data roaming before you arrive. โโช Tab Water is excellent and there are many free drinking water fountains in the city: Refill your water bottle, save our planet, save money. โโช In Prague Centre to shop for cheap food some of the most popular discount supermarkets are maybe ๐ BILLA inside the main train station (open 6-23 โ located at south side inside the station hall), ๐ BILLA directly next to Metro station Florenc (open 6-23, near the main bus station) or maybe ๐ LIDL a discounter in the city center (open 7-22 โ free Wifi spot in designer entry lobby with stone benches. Tip: there you can also get machine coffee or hot chocolate for just 20kc = Euro 0.90) inside former Czech Industrial Bank. You find the huge stunning round Safe vault door build 1931 at the cashiers wall.
โ Cash currency: โโช Many restaurants, coffeehouses and clubs accept NO credit cards. Always carry local cash or ask if cards are accepted beforehand. โโช When you exchange cash watch the exchange rate. The fair cash exchange rate is roughly 24 for 1 Euro). Only European currency and US$ are accepted. โโช Try to use "Bankomats" in official banks only. Even there be alert and always select the option "without conversion" to avoid the surcharge with a "guaranteed" bad (!) fixed exchange rate.
โ 24h Luggage Storage in Prague Centre: โโช Main Train Station ("Hlavnรญ Nรกdraลพ"), in the beginning of the north passage to train platforms, open 5-24: 150kc = Euro 6.50 for 24h, standard locker fits about 3 backpacks, payment by card only โโช Cheap option for single piece luggage: Main Train Station, upper most southern tunnel passage, open 6-23: normal size baggage or backpacks (normal = hight up to 100cm) 60kc cash (no cards accepted) or Euro 2.50 cash (Euro cash is accepted) for 24 hours (just the real stored hours are counted), large luggage (over 100cm in hight) 100kc per piece or Euro 4 for 24 hours โโช Main Bus Station Florenc ("UAN Praha Florenc"). ONLY take the storage in "Hall 1" in the red brick building, next to ticket counters, open 5-24, 70kc = Euro 3 per piece per day.
โ Up to date Traveler Information: The most informative quality "infotainment" videos about Prague you get from vlogger Janek Rubes ("Honest Guide" โ investigative journalism prize awarded โ over 1.3M followers): [www.youtube.com/HONESTGUIDE].โ You can see photos of him together with me in my Couchsurfing photo albums here. Janek is kinda funny: "Follow me for the best Absinthe in Prague!" he said at mid day to a large tour group of South Koreans, when I was with him. You should have seen the surprised faces... But: There are sponsorships in his videos and many tips are for "normal tourists", less suited for students or low budget CSers.
โ Souvenirs . . . ! Maybe forget the usual cheap rubbish? Authentic Ideas: โโช Beer cosmetics, used since the Middle Ages ("Vitamin B" beer spa soap, shower gel, lotion, cream or shampoo โYou find them for instance at "Manufaktura" Praha). โโช Krtek, the communist adventurous black mole. One of these cute puppets even traveled aboard the NASA Space Shuttle 2011. โโช Real handmade Wood Marionettes (including Dinos, animals, skeletons) and puppets. "You don't choose your puppet, the puppet chooses you." โโช At the exit of the famous "Golden Lane" at Prague Castle (exit steps down) you find an automat selling truly unique Golden Lane Franz Kafka golden coins for Euro 3. โโช Mucha Museum and Kafka Museum both have great arty gift shops: cool umbrellas, prints, mousepads and unique art. โโช Antiques and Second Hand clothes from the communist era of 1970s and 1980s in local thrift shops. Second Hand shops are booming here, there are over 140 in Prague. Best ones are in Prague Holesovice. โโช Artistic handmade Glassware from Gallery and Museum shops. โโช For animal lovers: "Elephant Urine" ("Slonรญ moc") from Prague Zoo's own distillery, it is a strong, legal drink!
โ Go to the hidden Student Club "Mrtva Ryba" in the โ University Garden, the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science.
โ In Winter skate on Prague's Ice Skating Rings in addition to visiting the Christmas markets. Skates you can usually rent on site. Many spots are just fantastic, Castle view often included!
โ Dance at Prague riverside at night. Visit bars and bistros on riverside moored former freight boats.
โ "Get Lost...!" โ Try to plan at least one long evening just wandering, without any google pins, without a plan, just enjoying "getting lost" in a unique fairy tale setting of the past. You can feel the magic.
โ Watch sunsets from a free rooftop.
G E N E R A Lโ A D V I C E :
Most visitors to Prague mainly do these touristic Top-15 spots and activities:
Charles Bridge โข Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Palaces and Castle Gardens โข Astronomical Clock โข Wandering touristic Old Town, Wenceslas Square and Lesser Town โข Rotating Kafka Head โข Jewish quarter/synagogue โข Lennon Wall โข "Narrowest" street โข Riverside and Dancing house โข Free walking tour โข Book tower and National Library โข Beer "tasting" โข Czech restaurant and coffee shop โข Tourist bar or club โข Buying a souvenir
Great, do it too, but add sparks:
You! can! experience! so! much! more! here.
Prague actually can be a magical life-long memory.
โ
Price levels: The inflation rate is 8%. Prices 2024 are about 1/3 cheaper compared to Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam or Vienna. As a low budget Couchsurfer you are doing fine with $10/day, can live like a VIP with $20 and still can have lots of fun with just $5. I had guests partying without any money. Just do it like the locals: avoid any touristic bar, club, cafe or restaurant. If you see mainly tourists around you: move on!
โ
โ โPRAGUE
โ โTOURIST
โ โT R A P S
Tourist Trap = taking advantage of you being in an unknown situation:
โข Mini Markets, for tourists only, locals don't use them (charging inflated prices, some sell drinks or snacks more expensive than in the most fancy restaurant) โข Money Exchanges (many of them you better avoid) โข Most ATMs (unfair exchange rates or transaction fees of about Euro 7) โข Fake Weed Shops โข Crooked Taxis's โข Money Scammers on the street โข "Traditional" Trdelnik shops (get sick at inflated prices for which you could get a great full meal) โข Prague center Tourist Restaurants (expensive at average quality) โข Hop On / Hop Off busses โข Fake Absinthe โข Tourist Restaurant tricks like ...food by weight ...extra expensive tourist beer or ...coverages fee for forks and knifes โข All inclusive boat cruises โข Pub crawls โข Historic car rides โข Beer "Spa" โข Strip Clubs โข Massage Shops โข Medieval Meals โข Public Transport Ticket Inspectors (bullying you to pay on the spot) โข Tourist concerts โข Highway toll sticker (buy the electronic car vignette online, you save a lot) โข Airport "Express Bus" (it costs triple and it's much slower than public bus 119 and Metro "A") โข Candy Shops for tourists only โข Most souvenir shops.
โข "The TIP-scam", sadly a very common scam: In some touristic restaurants a 15 to 25 percent "tip-surcharge" is added to your credit/debit card bill when you pay. Secretly! Or you will be directly asked to add a high tip to your bill. To me this even happened in the famous 5 Star Rooftop restaurant "U Prince" โ they asked me: "You are fine to add a 15 percent tip to our invoice, aren't you?"
โข When you only have Euro banknotes and no cards are accepted, expect an insane exchange rate in restaurants or shops.
โญโ A FEW
โญโ FINAL
โญโ HINTS
Tourist here concentrate on a few overcrowded hotspots.
โญ "Instagram" โ All the famous Insta locations you will see for yourself. They are located in a small area ...if you have an open mind and use trams (do it, it's fun!) you can discover much more than any "influencer".
โญ "TikTok" โ Skip TikTok-tips about Prague given by "non-locals".
โญ "Popular" ...but maybe not wise โ The greedy Prague tourism industry came up with some insanely overpriced ideas. Advertised on the popular websites most travelers use: Pub crawls. "Medieval" meals (often for up to Euro 50 per person: you can buy the same food for Euro 7). Expensive tourist concerts (there are many free concerts). "Cannabis" shops for tourists only (all offered products contain 0% THC). Tourist restaurants (you can dine much better for much less money). China souvenirs. Beer-Bus. Sex "Museum". Trdelnik/Trdlo chimney "cakes" (Cinnamon Sugar Pastry originating in the North of Hungary as "Kรผrtลskalรกcs", later in Slovakia/Moravia โ historically never eaten before in Prague, for uninformed tourists only: in Prague usually wrongly prepared as my Hungarian guests noticed, stone-hard, without any caramel glaze, not butter soft as they should be). Thai massages. Golem tour. Beer "Spas" for tourists โ Czech laugh about that concept, they drink their beer. Many boat "cruises" (rent your own small rowing or pedal boat: so much more fun at a fraction of the price. Or take a cute river Mini Ferry, often you are alone on it โ it is for free with the 24h public transport ticket). Purely touristic bars. "Historic" car rides (these are replica cars: recently 48 of 50 tested cars failed the government safety checks). "ATM's" just aimed at tourists. Scooters: You must drive them on the streets by law, dangerous and ...expensive. Hop-on/off busses (Euro 20). Bike tours in Prague center (Prague is not Amsterdam). Tourist street "trains" โ Travel smarter: THINK!
โญ "Best of Lists" โ I have not yet seen any Prague list which makes sense for low budget Couchsurfers (apart from the main top touristic attractions)
โญ "Free Walking Tours" โ Can often be sensational, if your guide is great and presents with love and real enthusiasm. That's the catch. Usually you get no information about your guide beforehand. Dull guides are a waste of your valuable time. So are "pub crawls", "bar tours" and guided "beer tasting experiences" (do that in really cool hip places, with friends). Remember: It is not for "free", you do pay ...with your limited time available here in Prague. Maybe opt for special tours: night tours, architectural tours, communism tours, cool neighbourhood tours. These usually are offered by guides with dedication and often special academic knowledge.
โญ "Tourist Ghetto Tips" โ The average tourists just stays 1-2 days in Prague, never leaves old town (which covers less than 1% of the entire land of the city of Prague) and rarely uses public transport. Most visitors experience a de facto beautiful "ghetto stay". Most "recommendations" online are from these tourists. Be smarter: Yes, have a look at the top tourist attractions (off-time, avoiding the crowds), maybe go to a hyped tourist restaurant, bar or tourist coffee shop but then ...explore for yourself. Stay longer than 1-2 days. Walk off-time, at night. Get lost! Explore parks, thrift shops, beer gardens, hidden coffee shops, Prague's hipster areas and discover authentic charming gems. Every quarter of Prague has a different vibe. Some feel like Paris, some are still communist, some are hip like Berlin or are filled with grungy underground music clubs. You may be stunned!
โญ "Tripadvisor" โ Once you found a location, Tripadvisor is a good tool to check for critical experiences. But: Not really good to find great local cool venues. The highest rated "best" bars in Prague are old "Irish Pubs" which no local would ever visit. The highest rated "clubs" here are dull, expensive tourist traps. Better do not rely much on "Tripadvisor" โ the ratings in Prague are by foreign tourists for tourists.
Locals usually do not leave ratings on touristic sites, many pearls are not rated highly on Tripadvisor. Another extreme example: The highest rated Tripadvisor tour in Prague is a "Shooting Range Tour" (5.0 stars, 896 reviews) โ you do not go to Prague to shoot with weapons, ...please. And tourist foodie tours. The "best" Tripadvisor recommendations often are full of tourists, not authentic, overpriced and overhyped. You can easily find so much better and much cheaper.
When you are a "penniless" Couchsurfer: get good local insider tips. Many tips online are "recycled" or just touristic and usually commercial.
