CURRENT MISSION

ABOUT ME
What can I say about myself? I was born in Zurich, Switzerland, but in 1993 my family decided to emigrate to Western Canada. I have been living in Edmonton since 1997, and I really enjoy living here. I have worked in a restaurant as a cook for several years during university and now work as a lawyer for a small firm. Physically I'm about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh about 172 pounds (178 cm and 78 kg). I used to be blond as a kid, but now my hair is brown. My eyes are blue. In terms of personality, I'd say I'm generally very easy-going and don't stress over small things going not quite the way I want them to. I try to find the humour in any situation. However, if I'm focused on a particular goal I work very hard and remain very focused on achieving it.
PHILOSOPHY
I'm a big believer in Social Justice, and as such have joined the wonderful organizations Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and also signed up for kiva.org, which provides micro-credit to people in developing countries.
As far as life philosophies are concerned, I'm not really sure why we are here, but my personal goal is to make a positive contribution to this planet in my own small way. I'm not really interested in being a career-ladder climber and indulging myself with meaningless material goods. That's not to say that I wouldn't appreciate a little wealth and a few "toys", but obtaining such things is not a priority for me. I'll consider myself lucky if I can find a job where I love every minute of it, that I can be passionate about, and earn enough cash to keep me afloat.

Musik, Filme und Bücher
Music:
I pretty much enjoy every type of music, with the possible exception of country music (which I can tolerate in small doses, but that's about it). I find that my main preferences in music tend to change over the years, but at the moment I very much enjoy what I would term "chill out" music from artists such as Bonobo, Delerium, Cafe del Mar, Moby, etc. But I definitely also appreciate good ol' Rock 'n Roll, Trance, Metal, Hip-Hop, and Classical Music. When relaxing with a good book I also tend to enjoy some soothing background music such as Enya, Loreena McKennitt, or Secret Garden.
Books:
I enjoy High Fantasy series (i.e. NOT D&D-style cheesy crap!) such as "The Lord of the Rings" and "A Song of Ice and Fire", Historical Fiction (anything written by Bernard Cornwell, Edward Rutherford or Pierre Berton), and exciting mystery thrillers such as Ruiz Carlos Zafon's "The Shadow of the Wind" (which I'd highly recommend to anyone!). I also try to read a classic every now and again. I recently finished "War and Peace", "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Oliver Twist (who I'm named after). Next up is probably Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment".
Movies:
Any historical or pseudo-historical movies or TV series that are well done (!) will usually grab my interest. Examples include Gladiator, Braveheart (even if it takes some historical liberties), Luther, The Lord of the Rings, Hotel Rwanda (probably one of the most touching movies I ever saw!), Enemy at the Gates and The Lives of Others. I've also gained a strong appreciation for well-done TV series such as Rome, The Tudors, Game of Thrones, and Six Feet Under. I'm also fond of witty comedies such as Waking Ned Devine, Goodbye Lenin, Arrested Development, skits and movies by the German comedian Loriot, and downright silliness (anything by Mel Brooks or Monty Python).
