One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In 2017, I arrived at my semester abroad program a early to start on-boarding for an internship opportunity. After flying into Pudong airport, taking the metro across the city, and finally arriving at my new boss’ home, she immediately told me that she was leaving for the week and that I would be responsible for managing all correspondences between her and her team. Little did I know that “managing correspondences” would mean communicating between different stakeholders 24/7 to organize a major conference in Hangzhou backed by the Chinese government. My first week abroad I hardly slept. While my peers explored neighborhoods and got drunk at bars, I spent my days in Wework coordinating logistics between executives across industries to put on a conference. Because I was communicating over Wechat and email, everyone assumed I an expat entrepreneur. In fact, to this day, no one realizes that the person they were taking to in the early stages of event planning was actually a frazzled study abroad student from Los Angeles.
After my boss came back, she thanked me for all I did and was happy how things went smoothly. Days later, she stepped back from her role in the conference and moved to Nairobi to work at a tech company. While I found another company to work for and subsequently had a much better internship experience, I am thankful for this odd gig that allowed me to proved to myself how much I am capable of and how important it is to keep an open mind while living abroad!
