About Me
Last month I began writing about a 382-day, 48-state cross country solo motorcycle tour that I completed in October 2016. That trip was one of the most amazing experiences of my relatively long life. I undertook the sojourn at 70 to renew my spirit, encourage my life partner and family to be more open to life, challenge others to engage differences, and meet and document the stories of the everyday people I met. The couchsurfing network was a cerrished major portion of that journey.
I'll soon be 74, I’m in relatively good health, and traveling from LA to Fort Lauderdale, to meet family members there for the holidays. I’ll complete a 13-day service, and silent-meditation course at the Vipassana center in 29 Palms, CA, on Sunday. I first attended the 10-day mditaton course here in June 2016. Sitting in that desert setting renewed my vitality, allowing me to finish the tour spiritually renewed, and intellectually bouyant.
I'm a poet, blogger, and journalist by profession. I self-published 2 books this year. I've been a poet and cultural community activist since the early '70s, when I was still livng in New York. I'm twice married —17, and now 30 years— with five children, two grand grandkids, and two other children who we’ve helped to raise.
Founding and directing the Three Rivers Jenbe Ensemble has been my most rewardng work. I co-founded the traditional Afrikan music and culture ensemble in 1999, and the impact those young people had on Fort Wayne raised the bar for community building, and gave each child and their parents a more positive outlook on themselves, their relationships, and the world.
A New Yorker by birth, I’ll only need a place to lay my head for a couple of days. I’m scheduled to arrive in Fort Lauderdale about 8PM on the 18th, and will meet my family —who’ll be coming in from Indiana— on the afternoon of the 20th. I hope you can help me out. Peace, Happiness, & Liberation!
