About Me

Hi! I'm Oona. I'm a recent college graduate (Bard College '17). I work seasonally in the service industry on Nantucket—both at restaurants and as a private caterer and oyster shucker. I love all kinds of music, especially playing music and going to see live music. I'm also a big fan of making and eating food of all kinds (I think it's one of the best ways to learn the story of a place, at least as an entry point.) I love making connections and meeting new people, and I'm really excited to begin my adventures.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on couch surfing because I'm a lover of travel. I'm always excited to meet new people and get a local perspective on the places I plan on visiting.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like books of all kinds—I was a literature major in college. I love memoirs, particularly anything by David Sedaris, The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, Mindy Kaling's books, etc. I really like poetry as well, my favorites at the moment are probably Rilke's Duino Elegies, Faulkner's Leaves of Grass, and Allen Ginsberg's Howl. I love graphic novels (and even wrote my undergraduate thesis about them!); some favorites are Alan Moore's Watchmen and V for Vendetta, Blankets by Craig Thompson, and Maus by Art Spiegelman. I also love mystery novels (especially Agatha Christie) and trashy historical fiction.

I like movies, but I'm more of a tv person. My favorite movies are probably Obvious Child, Little Miss Sunshine, Best in Show/A Mighty Wind, anything by Wes Anderson (but especially Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom). Favorite tv: The Great British Bake Off, Chopped, The Mighty Boosh, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Favorite music: endless and ever changing, but a few would be Johnny Cash, Wilco, Mitski, Lorde, Julien Baker, Hall & Oates, Chet Baker, Against Me!, Alex G, Angel Haze, Chance the Rapper, Billy Bragg, Charly Bliss, Beyonce, Prince, Elvis Costello, The Front Bottoms, G. Love and Special Sauce, The Gaslight Anthem, Hurray for the Riff Raff, etc. etc. etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few months ago I met a sloth named Pablito.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love collecting new odd skills. Among the things I've learned are: oyster shucking, knitting, emergency medicine (I was an EMT in college), minor carpentry skills (recently learned how to roof a house and do basic trim painting), fine gardening.

I'm interested in learning any kind of needle craft, anything about cooking, brewing, foraging, or making in general. I love learning from people who are passionate about their crafts and pursuits.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm very enthusiastic and I'm not a complainer. I am happy to share in any work that needs doing, or any task that needs to be undertaken. I'm always interested in good conversation, and in learning new things. I don't pretend to possess any kind of mastery, but I am always happy to share what I know and to use any skills that I've acquired to help other people.
