books: each different time I say a different book is my favorite I guess your mode changes your perspective. Best books I have read: animal farm, 1984, Kain and Abel, fountainhead.

Movies: that's a tough one...I have seen many movies, and I can enjoy any type at any time.
Shawshank redemption, Matrix (the first), Guy ritchie films, The departed, the usual suspects are among my favorite. I Tarantino's movies as well...I like good movies.
