About Me

CURRENT MISSION

TRAMPS LIKE US WERE BORN TO RUN

ABOUT ME

Right now I'm attempting to be an itinerant teacher.

My partner and I run a volunteer teaching project in conjunction with an extremely remote indigenous community in the middle of the Amazon rainforest: www.facebook.com/proyectosuwa

I write, sometimes. Here are some examples:

poetry: http://alanzapata.tumblr.com/
travelogue: http://esecaiman.wordpress.com/

I also enjoy thinking, reading, drinking, speaking Spanish, cycling, loud music.

----

PHILOSOPHY

I wouldn't attempt to summarise it neatly. I like to think it's partially a work in progress, and partially an ongoing practice.

----------------------------------

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Is there a CS spirit? I dunno, but I seem to end up defending it.

Right now I'm travelling a lot for work, mostly through Europe, so you may arrive at this profile cos I've posted in your city looking for something fun and interesting to do.

----------------------------

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I travelled a shitload through Mexico and so many people (both off here and Hospitality Club) helped me out. At times it almost felt like too much but that's cos of my British upbringing leaving me cold and distrusting. I also put up some people in Mexico City. My first guest stayed almost 2 weeks which I guess can only be a good thing.

London's a tricky one to host in, the distances are large, the prices are high and you tend to spend the first few days calming down people who had arrived expecting First World perfection, the hyperreal flipside to the all the problems they were sick of in Latin America. Yet in London, there's also crime, poverty and depression. I'm not sure how many people really enjoyed it and how many just found themselves sucked into the rather shitty, manipulative, wallet-sucking tourist trail round the city centre. Ah well.

I then found somewhere to live and made some good friends via CS in the incredibly difficult and paranoid environment of Caracas before using it to travel around Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, and other countries.

--------------------

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm an English teacher by profession but I'm reluctant to 'teach' people outside of a class - it's a bit of a busman's holiday (as we say in the UK)!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busman%27s_Holiday I do, however, enjoy the language swap - we're all teachers AND students there!

--
