About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Learn, study, live, enjoy, reflect, ponder.

ABOUT ME

In the summer of 1986 I first saw the light of day. Up to now, being born is still one of my greatest accomplishments. I mean, nothing else really compares if you look at it that way.

I like to think of myself as someone that is never unwilling to try new things. I don't like being stagnant, I feel like being stagnant and stuck in any single way of living is akin to being dead. I like being dynamic and trying to get as many things out of a day as I can, but at the same time appreciating them without rush. Hoarding and gathering material possessions is not what life is about for me (though they manage to tempt me with their beauty now and then). My interests vary wildly from technological mumbo-jumbo, astronomy, science, art, drinking and sampling delicious foods to things like politics, philosophy and spirituality, and discussing those subjects over a good alcoholic beverage is about as good as it gets.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

By trying to host whenever I have time and availability and by helping my couchsurfers as much as I can and they need.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

One of my favourite couch surfers was Vicky. She actually ended up staying with me a bit longer than originally planned, but she would sometimes surprise me with pancakes in the morning when she was staying with me in China. Best way to wake up.

A good couch surfing experience as a guest... There are quite a lot of them and I really hate to choose!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Sigur Ros, Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, Phosphorescent, Alt-J, David Bowie, and much much more. And always willing to listen to something new.
Books: Bill Bryson, Haruki Murakami, the Grapes of Wrath, On the Road, Tuesdays with Morrie. Be sure to give me some recommendations if you know any good ones.
Movies: Fargo, Julie&Julia, Annie Hall, Amelie, Kill Bill, Pan's Labyrinth, most of the stuff by Ghibli. These are the movies I can just watch over and over again.
TV shows: Though the description TV-show is a bit outdated (I don't even have a TV) there's quite a few that I enjoy. Such as Borgen, The Bridge, GoT, Real Humans, The Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad, and many more.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It's going to sounds rather bland and possibly familiar to some others, but here it is.

In the Guilin province of China (more specifically the touristy village of Yangshuo) I hired an electric scooter with a friend and we drove it for hours up to a deserted mountain where we started a campfire and set up our tent. On the way there we stopped at houses to gather some firewood. On the way back the next day there was a horrid rainstorm and the road back turned into a very big slidefest. Later, under the weight of our luggage and ourselves the scooter broke down. We slid it down a hill to a village where we got it repaired. Later, it broke again. While another, stronger motorcycle was towing us back to town it started raining again; the wheels slipped and we fell down, luggage and electric scooter and all, into knee-deep mud. We arrived back in the hotel hours later covered with caking mud (the sun was of course out again at this point) and leaving a faint trail of dust behind. But the whole adventure of driving, going off the touristy path, getting filthy and possibly flaunting the law is one I won't soon forget.
