About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Meet people, share ideas, grow food with computers

ABOUT ME

For those who prefer pictures over words: https://www.instagram.com/pdbthefifth/

I grew up on the beach in northeast USA playing sports (ice hockey, soccer, lacrosse), fishing, hunting, and surfing. I moved to Boston for university and spent four years there studying computer science. I also spent a year surfing and working in San Diego, California. Boston exposed me to a diverse group of people from all over the world.

My roommate Will introduced us to couchsurfing in 2014 and since then we've hosted 30+ people (mostly on his account: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/willchauvin).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm here as a host and surfer to make new friends, share stories, inspire and be inspired.

There's so many cool people in this world and I want to meet as many as I can. There is something to learn from everyone.

Interests

Surfing is my absolute favorite thing to do. There is nothing that compares to watching the sun set over the water while you wait for your perfect wave.

I snowboard in the winter, skateboard in the city, and wakeboard off my dad's boat back home.

If you beat me in chess, I'll make you dinner. But I'll make you dinner anyway, I like to cook.

I used to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and enjoy learning martial arts.

I'm always down to discuss technology that will shape our future -- solar power, artificial intelligence, self driving cars, all that fun tech stuff

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - just about everything from Bob Dylan to Notorious B.I.G. Lately I've been listening to a lot of jazzy hip hop when I study and electronic & house when I work out.

Movies - I almost never watch television or movies but I recently enjoyed Interstellar. Memento and Inception are legit too. GAME OF THRONES.

Books - Biography of Steve Jobs, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Currently reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've escaped death three times.

I built a computer that grows food in my apartment.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach
----------------
gardening, guitar, cooking, American drinking games, handstands, computer / programming / web development

I take an ice cold shower every morning for 2 minutes. It helps with surfing in the winter. But it's also like drinking 100 espressos! I can teach you the secret if you're brave enough.

When I was in school we hosted a disrobed buddhist monk who taught us how to meditate. 15 minutes in the morning has done amazing things for me. I'd be happy to pass on what I know.

Learn
----------------
I could always use some new dance moves. Or martial arts moves. And some good vocabulary from your language. I'll leave it up to you what to teach me :)

Mostly I just want to learn more about where you are from, what it was like to grow up there, and how it's made you into who you are.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'll cook up a meal or two. I'm a simple chef, usually spicy and 3 to 5 ingredients. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication right?

I am open minded, enjoy real conversations (deep meaningful conversations as my friends and I like to call them), and am down for just about any adventure.

I hope you can learn something from meeting me. At the very least let's hang out and enjoy the beauty of couchsurfing.
