About Me

I'm Pauric (pronounced paw-ric) and I'm from Ireland. I'm the ginger chap in the picture and the short blonde one is Chrissie (my girlfriend who is travelling with me).
I studied in Scotland for 4 years and then worked in England for 5 years (Manchester and Brighton). I stopped work as a pharmacist in May 2018 to go back full time at a kids camp and now I've decided to go on an extended (up to 18 months - currently 8 months in) trip around Asia and South America, it seemed much more appealing than being a 'proper' grown up and buying a house just yet. I've been talking about going on a big trip since I was 13 years old, and have finally got round to doing it. If you're keen to see that I'm real or just interested in how the trip is going, check #abeardedirishmanabroad on Instagram. This is my first ever use of hashtags, I'm being dragged into the 21st century slowly but surely.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm looking to couch surf to get to meet local people and see the real culture of a place. I like to cook, but want to expand my range of cuisines. In an ideal world, I'd love learn how to cook local cuisine from local people or I'm doing cooking classes as I go. And I'm always happy to cook if people are kind enough to let me loose in the kitchen.
I'm not in a position to host at the minute as I'm travelling, but will be more than happy once I'm back in Ireland/the UK after travelling.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - such a cliché answer, but a bit of everything. I plan to see live, amateur musicians in each place I go to.
Books - some of the books I've read on the trip so far: Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall, The Sarawak Report by Clare Rewcastle-Brown, Two brothers by Ben Elton, Freakonomics by Levitt/Dubner, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, Milkman by Anna Burns, A Short History of S.E Asia by Peter Church and some easy reads by Nick Spalding and Dan Brown.
Movies - a bit of everything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

1) Working/volunteering at a camp in Ireland for children affected by serious illness. The whole purpose is to rebuild their self confidence through having fun and helping them rediscover what it is to be kids again. The difference in the kids between when they come to camp and leave is genuinely incredible.
2) Doing a naked bungee jump in Queenstown in New Zealand - my friend said he would pay for me if I did it naked as I had run out of money and hadn't yet found a job. Don't worry, I promise to stay fully clothed if you're gracious enough to host me!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm friendly and would love to get to know you and your culture, but at the same time I'm happy to entertain myself. I genuinely love sticking on my day pack and going exploring a new place/culture.
I'm fully house trained and pride myself on getting a nice shine to glass counters and kitchen hobs- the secret is small concentric circles and elbow grease!
