About Me

I'm trying to make better mistakes.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The answer is in Raúl González Tuñón's marvelous poem, "La cerveza del pescador Schiltigheim":

"Para que un día nos queden unos cuantos recuerdos: decir, estuve,
estuve en tal pasión, en tal recodo.
Estuve por ejemplo, en la feria de Aubervilliers una mañana, con un trozo de asado, una amistad tranquila, la mesa clara, el perro, el buen hablar y afuera, las verduleras de París chapoteando con los zuecos en la nieve."

I highly recommend to read the whole poem. Google it!

... And if you want to message me, please invite me to drink the Schiltigheim fisherman's beer. This way I'll know that you've read my profile.

Music, Movies, and Books

It's easy to be unfair while making any sort of list, but here are a few of the artists that have influenced me:

Litterature: Roberto Bolaño, Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Mann, Rubem Fonseca, Nelson Rodrigues, Jorge Amado, Mario Vargas Llosa, David Mourão-Ferreira, Vinícius de Moraes, Ferreira Gullar, Miguel Torga — mostly Latin-American and Portuguese litterature, I admit. Bolaño's Los detectives salvages ans Kazantzakis' Zorba the greek are the novels that impacted me the most.

Cinema: Manoel de Oliveira. And I regret that life is not a Jacques Demy movie — like Les demoiselles de Rochefort. I'm not very fond of contemporary cinema, but I do love Wim Wenders' Perfect days.

Musical: Classical, opera, jazz and a lot of stuff under the awful label of World Music.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've traveled all over Latin America by land and walked more than 2.000km from Porto to Toulouse carrying all my stuff in a baby stroller.

...But most of all, I've loved. Sometimes it seems that it's not everybody who can say so.
