About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Travel the United States in my restored Winnebago

ABOUT ME

I must get my travel instinct from my mother - she left her home in England at the age of 18 to travel the world and find new opportunities. After traveling, she eventually moved permanently to the United States and raised my brother and myself. I've been living in Delaware for my entire life (23 years), and boy am I ready to get out! Most of Delaware is an unfortunate example of suburban sprawl and poor city planning. It used to be a beautiful Mid-Atlantic state, but now seems to be a festering cess-pool for suburbanites. Ahem, maybe that was a bit harsh, but I am a landscape designer! That being said, the University of Delaware in Newark is a great place, and if you find yourself in my state, aim for Sussex county (Delaware beaches are surprisingly beautiful) or stay in New Castle and travel to the surrounding big cities (Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore). So anyway, more about me - Like I said, I'm a Landscape Design and Plant Science student at the University of Delaware. I have one more semester before I am completely finished! My future goals include getting a Masters in Landscape Architecture and traveling... a lot. I want to travel the world to see plants in their native settings, as well as experience new and exciting landscapes.

PHILOSOPHY

I am a part of all that I have met.
(Alfred Lord Tennyson)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Traveling at the moment, but eventually I would like to offer a couch when I am more settled.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Not so much experience couchsurfing. I do contact a lot of couch surfers with requests, but I tend to operate on a different sort of schedule than most people. Because of my last minute planning, most people don't have availability. My friends endearingly call me "hurricane hannah" because I leave chaos wherever I go due to my lack of planning. I'm always throwing ideas out there, and generally tireless in pursuing adventures.

Interests

I'm of course interested in plants; their physiology, botanical names, growth habits, history, and use in the landscape. I have played the clarinet and piano for about 9 years, although it's been over a year since I have practiced either one! I love the opera, as well as wine and the "finer things in life". I love to read about fashion and keep up to date on the latest styles, but I absolutely 100% dislike shopping... especially in malls! I love being outdoors and going on adventures.

Music, Movies, and Books

Huge movie fan! I like 'em all, as long as it's a good movie.
Music - I love, love, love going to the opera. I've seen countless operas on film, and 3 operas at the Metropolitan opera in NYC. I like most types of music, but probably judge new songs too quickly. I have to like it, or be interested in it within the first 15-20 seconds or else it's on to the next radio station (a syndrome known as radio ADHD). My favorite band is the Talking Heads.
Books - I should probably read more, but I generally enjoy the classics. Howards End has always been a favorite. Being a girl, I have OF COURSE read most of Jane Austen's novels. I recently read The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan - highly recommend any of this books! I also recommend reading Cold Mountain.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can definitely teach people about the plants in their backyard, as well as help develop a brief design for their properties. I'm a hand-drafter, so I can teach how to properly draft, but I also know a few landscaping computer programs (Auto-cad, Dynascape, Vectorworks, Google sketch up). I'm definitely an easy person to get along with, and I love to go out to places in a groups and have a crazy time. I want to learn about anything that interests me... as far as I know, that could be anything!
