About Me

I'm an Irish guy who likes to have positive expansive experiences, and meet cool thoughtful people who are open to sharing their journey and insights or stories they've picked up. I believe people are liable be surprising and marvellous when given the chance, and challenge your preconceptions. I like to learn new things and share stories and knowledge. There are few things I like more than a free-ranging and open-minded conversation over a nice meal and a few beers. Music and going to the pub are always great as well. I'm studying to be a psychotherapist and it's interesting if demanding. I guarantee not to practise it on guests!

I do Tai Chi and Chi Gung. It helps to settle down the mind and relax and strengthen the body, which aids the difficult and sometimes painful work involved in psychotherapy. Its fun and fascinating to learn, and just good for wellbeing generally.

I also love to be out on the bike when the weather warms up, cycling around town or into the mountains south of Dublin, or also walks in that area.

I try to live fairly green and keep down my carbon footprint.

I write poetry and prose. I love to read essays, non-fiction, sociology, psychiatry, philosophy, or just interesting books, on organic agriculture, Moorish art, rock n roll, mental health, language, whatever. From Oscar Wilde to R.D. Laing, Charles Bukowski to W.G. Sebald, Carson McCullers to Gerard Manley Hopkins. Lots of books and not enough shelves.

I'm pretty relaxed and sociable, I like to get along with people, I read a lot, don't watch TV or much in the way of series, mostly films, like good dramas or documentaries. I like live music, traditional Irish, rock or jazz or world or independent.

I would be interested to host people travelling through Dublin, to engage with them and hear some of their experiences, and maybe show them some parts of the city that I've gotten fond of and think they might enjoy.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

People I know who've done it both as hosts and as guests have recommended it. It sounds like an open-minded, positive, educational way of facilitating social and cultural interaction and making things a bit more welcoming and less anonymous for travellers in a new country or city.
