About Me

CURRENT MISSION

What's a mission?

ABOUT ME

I was a frustrated academic, now I'm an itinerant journalist working freelance in the Athens of the North! Like reading, writing, sports (football and, unusually for an Irishman, cricket) and politics (yep, I know).

PHILOSOPHY

Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.
Marcus Aurelius

though i'm starting to think Herman Goering was on to something when he said 'everytime i hear the word culture i reach for my revolver'....just kidding!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've couchsurfed everywhere from Iceland to New York.

Interests

I love getting out and meeting people, nothing beats an unexpected night! my job involves lots of new faces everyday, which is a great plus!!
I also love living in other places as well as just visiting them, being from the middle of ireland i've always wanted to get out and see the world, living in New York for a couple of years and Denmark have definitely been the standouts. there is something so satisfying about spending long enough in a place to know bus times, opening hours and the habits of the locals
I like a drink and a chat, preferably together! a great night out often involves a gig, i'm into everything from indie rock (pavement my boyhodd fav's...still hold a torch), post punk (listening to caberat voltaire as i type this) to electronica and free jazz.
I wish it was'nt one of my interests but i've become kinda obsessed with running this last year....i know go five times a week, what is that about??

Music, Movies, and Books

I think i've mentioned most of these already, movies i'm eclectic as hell, though rom-com's i can do without...oh and martial arts flicks...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

i've seen iceland...pure and simple...everything form the northern lights to Isafjordur on a Fri nitgh and the glaciers...all so breathtaking, am really looking forward to going back again really soon

Teach, Learn, Share

i've some really corny jokes (as Ealasaid can testify ...) but do have a quite detailed knowledge of lots of things, i've read way too much so i can wax lyrical for hours on irish (and northern irish) history and politics, music, books, films, just finished a history of modern cyprus so if anyone wants to know about that i'd be delighted to fill them in! actually i've done a lot of teaching in my life so am always eager to share...by same token i'm done a lot of learning and am really excited about the possibility of doing more...the more i know , i realise that i know nothing...
