ABOUT ME

Robert Heinlein says that specialization is for insects. I'm trying not to be an insect. Unfortunately my suburban upbringing has left me lacking basic skills, and now I'm making up for lost time. I'm learning to grow vegetables, write stories, bake bread, speak Spanish, and ferment my food. I'm convinced that specialization makes a person miserable, and I'm determined to enjoy my life.

Interests

Reading fiction and non-fiction, especially Wendell Berry and Howard Zinn, farming, beekeeping, writing, cooking, baking, running, learning, eating, traveling, fighting mountaintop removal, participating in communities, feeding the hungry, and living frugally.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once I walked across a mountaintop removal site, where an entire range had been blasted and flattened for the coal underneath. Nothing grew there. It was like a gray desert tucked away in the middle of the beautiful Appalachian forest. It was surreal. It gave me the willies.
