About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Play music, write, explore, and find like minded folks.

ABOUT ME

Easy-going, friendly, kind, creative and ambitious. I care deeply about the people around me, and I want to go out and see more. I've got a 'natural' look, with uncut hair and a scrappy beard that I've decided for the time being to not cut again. I like to say "Your hair is you, don't cut yourself short!"

PHILOSOPHY

I can get a little deep- but don't worry, I won't start talking about the cosmos and pantheism unless that's what you happen to feel like talking about.

Since it's asked of me here, I'm something of an Anarchic Dao Buddhist. I look at all as one and infinite. I don't believe in a higher power- rather the universe as the infinite collection of interconnecting variables that are ever-changing, and we as sentient beings have the closest thing I know of to omnipotency in our ability to manipulate the world around us with our actions. I think self-sustainability is a very important aspect of our lives that civilization is forgetting about. I don't necessarily believe in "going primitive", but I do think there is a lot to be learned from successful models of living demonstrated in communal and tribal living.

I think it's important to be good to people around you, because in my eyes, hurting another person is ultimately just self-harm on a cosmic scale.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've hosted numerous times before through at numerous houses with multiple friends. Now my friend Tom Pikul and I are traveling though Europe to play music and explore. Hopefully the Couchsurfing network will occasionally accomodate us!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I let a friend stay rent-free at my house for a while. During that time he hosted a lot of couch surfers, and I had a great time getting to know them and learning of their experiences. Later I lived at a co-op house in Memphis called Courthouse that hosted a great deal of couchsurfers as well as touring musicians. My best friends have couch-surfed before as well. I'm excited to try it out for myself!

Interests

I'm interested in learning about permaculture and sustainable agriculture. I like philosophy, sci-fi, film, and even playing the occasional video game. I especially like writing and to sing and play guitar.

Music, Movies, and Books

Favorite movies- "The Fountain", "A Waltz With Bashir", "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou", "The Big Lebowski", and "Doom Generation".

Favorite musicians- Arcade Fire, Johnny Flynn, Fleet Foxes, Decemberists, Lost In The Trees, Neutral Milk Hotel, Gorillaz.

Favorite authors- Daniel Quinn ("Ishmael", "Story of B"), Garth Ennis ("Preacher", "Hitman"), Warren Ellis ("Transmetropolitan")

I'm also a HUGE fan of Star Trek and Dragonball Z. Also comics and Star Wars.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I founded the Savannah chapter of the Occupy movement and worked very hard to keep it going for a long time. I left after a while, realizing that if somehow there had been some sort of overnight revolution I would have had no idea what to do with it- what could be done that wouldn't just ultimately crop up the same problems that are fought against in practically every historical revolution? I've learned a lot since then about history and the nature of these problems inherent to hierarchical civilization as we know it. I've also been a gardening intern at a co-op house in Memphis, TN, which was on of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

Also I got to be a Locations Production Assistan on the HBO miniseries John Adams.

Teach, Learn, Share

I guess I'm something of a philosopher- I know a little biological history too. My friend and I can play you some good music also! As for what I want to learn- permaculture and ecological design!
