Because you are directly in contact with the "native" when you go somewhere and it's more fun and interesting to discover a place this way than through a touristic book.

Movies : Terrence Malick (I think "The Red Line" is my favorite movie), David Lynch, Sergio Leone, Fritz Lang, Sidney Lumet, Jim Jarmush...
Books : Mostly poetry, I don't often read novel. I love Walt Whitman and William Blake in poetry and Thomas Mann in novels.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I living several month I a tribe in New Caledonia (North of New Zeland and Est of Australia) on the island of Lifou. I learn that life is actually and must be simple : you just cultivate your field in the morning and then underwater fishing in the afternoon and the night you have fun with your friend around a fire on the beach.
I also spent one year in the jungle in Noth Karnataka, India. It's a music school where I was teaching english and learning tabla in the same time

I learned literature, philosophy and cinema. This days I learn economy and physic sciences by myself (well, i'm trying...)
