I've used Couchsurfing for meetups with new friends in Ethopia, Sweden, Norway and in Washington DC. Every time, I've been overwhelmed with how friendly, giving and interesting people can be.

Saw protesters burn the capital in Buenos Aires, climbed Kilimanjaro, bungee jumped from a gondola in Switzerland, talked with Santa in Finland, pretended to be Jewish and went on a free trip to Israel, snuck into the Dome of the Rock mosque in Jerusalem, saw thousands pray before protesting in Tahrir in Cairo, swam in a school of tuna in the Philippines, saw a giant sea turtle lay eggs in Oman, was in a whip-fighting festival in Ethiopia, held baby chimps in Uganda, sang on a variety show in Shanghai, burned dung for warmth in Mongolia, saw a man take eight bottles to the head in Taipei, saw a naked man walk down the busy streets of Accra in Ghana, ran for my life from a fight in Brazil and from a train conductor in Italy, went to top of the tallest building in Dubai, hiked on glaciers in Alberta, flew in a helicopter over Baghdad, slept through a bombing in Kabul, almost was shipwrecked in Lake Titicaca, ran with the bulls in Spain and went on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
