About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Never refuse an adventure

ABOUT ME

I'm a professional geek who travels the world, speaks at conferences, runs training courses, and gets up to mischief. I spend anywhere from 3-6 months each year travelling.

Currently my biggest interests are in neuro/psych topics. I love learning how people think and how they work.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Currently I'm a coffee and adventure participant in Melbourne, Australia. I grab unwitting travellers, give them a hot beverage, and drag them off to whatever amazing events and activities are happening in my hometown at the time. :)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Most of my travels are spent staying with utterly fabulous people who allow me to stay in their homes. Most of these haven't been arranged through the couchsurfing.org website; I joking refer to "geeksurfing", where I use my existing professional connections to find places to stay.

Interests

SCUBA diving, mushroom hunting, cycling, people, Perl.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

☸ Cycled hundreds of kilometres along the Great Ocean Road.
* Gone SCUBA diving with Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux.
* Had a live audience of almost 3,000 people.
* Kept chickens in my backyard.
* Wrote my very first childhood essay on "My D&D Character" (copies available upon request).
* Discovered just how hard it is to fox-proof a chicken pen.
* Started a business that centres around achieving a good lifestyle and doing things that help the community, and had it actually work!
* Seen the most amazing glow-worm display ever in a remote Tasmanian cave.
♥ Used code to improve my social life.
* Discreetly "edited" signs to correct apostrophe abuse.
⚘ Found lots of good things to eat growing outside, especially mushrooms!
✈ Traveled around Europe, the USA, Oceania, the Middle East, and a bit of Asia.
* Met a great many amazing and influential people.
⚃ Started a role-playing club in primary school.
☀ Hacked an override circuit into my solar hot water unit.
* Written a program to play MineSweeper for me, automatically!
⚓ Broken the record for the world's largest simultaneous robot dance. I was leading a contingent of dancers dressed as pirates, and got on national TV as a result.
* Made the most incredibly delicious pickled wild mushrooms.
* Written a text adventure game to win a girl's heart. ;)
* Been awarded the "special" barnstar for my outstanding contributions to Spoken Wikipedia (links available upon request).
* Put music on my headphones and pretended that I'm in a movie. The Matrix and Mission Impossible soundtracks are particularly good for this.
* Went from being a spectator to a participant in 2010 Rose Festival Starlight Parade by discreetly joining the Pirates of Portlandia float as it went past.
* Been knocked unconscious by a shark.
Ϟ Built a Kelvin's Thunderstorm, a machine that turns tap water into high voltage electricity.
* Found multiple locations from Ghostbusters in New York.
* Created glowing slime.
* Been asked to model for a Steampunk fashion show.
* Proposed to Carmen Sandiego (she declined).
* Created electroluminescent pants.
* Worked as a Steampunk model.
* Managed a team of fetish models! ^_^
* Performed science on stage.
* Explored Melbourne's underground stormwater tunnels.
* Taken courses in massage therapy.
* Made ice-cream using dry ice! (Delicious!)
