About Me

I'm a journalist and filmmaker from Australia. I've been on couchsurfing.com about 15 years now, I used to use it all the time but haven't much the past few years, I guess because of covid and the way I was travelling changed, but now I'm back!!

I'm currently making a documentary about the international oil industry and how it ties us all to war and climate disasters and holds immense power over our governments, often in ways we don't realise. That's my job, telling stories about the world and the things that matter to me, which is an awesome way to make a living but sometimes a story just needs to be told even if there's no money to tell it. That's what's happening now and I guess that's what's brought me back to couchsurfing, I'm self-funding the film, so the budget is super tight, so I thought what better way to make it than to couchsurf like the old days, when I used to do this very thing.

Back in 2008-09 I rode my bike from Australia to Denmark, making a documentary about climate impacts, and I didn't have any money back then either, so that's when I was on couchsurfing the most.

Don't know how this link will work, but if you wanna see me latest film, it's right here: https://youtu.be/EGCYrK9ZC7k?si=TZ1_frpIjny6mpUQ It's called Conversations with Coal Miners about Climate Change and it was put out by VICE.

Anyways, if you can host me that'd be rad, and who knows, you might even end up in the film (unless you don't wanna of course!). :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm here cause I think it's an awesome way to travel and see the world, getting to know local people and not blowing your budget, plus I love to host people too, cause I wanna share the hospitality around and I love meeting new people too of course!!

Interests

I love making stories, writing, making films, playing football, watching football, eating foods from all over the world, seeing as much of the world as possible and trying to make the world a better place!

Music, Movies, and Books

I love most different types of music, I listen to loads of different things. Right now I just got onto Hermanos Gutierrez, and I often listen to soundtracks, like the Oppenheimer soundtrack, anything by Nicholas Britell, especially If Beale Street Could Talk, and lots of other things too.

I love lots of movies of course cause it's my job, but the movie that's influenced me the most is The Thin Red Line.

And books I've just got into Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, I especially love her book Purple Hibiscus.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I cycled across Mongolia. I was nuts, here's a video I made of the experience (many years ago). Apologies, it's not a great video: https://youtu.be/STH2OCtBjkg?si=WxuCJYdzuhguTxWh

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you filmmaking, how to play football and how to make an amazing banana and chocolate chip cake. I'm pretty good at fixing bikes. I'm pretty bad at everything else.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I lived in Bhutan in 2017 for a year, so I can share what its like to live there, and what it's like being a 42 year Australian who has spent a lot of his lifetime travelling the world and trying to learn as much as possible.
