About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm going to borrow a little something from Lemony Snicket and say I want live "unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things and happy in small ways."

ABOUT ME

I grew up in a tiny village in rural Utah. It is a lovely place with only about 200 people (and that's a generous estimate.) My family owns a small farm and I spent most of my childhood working and playing in the fields and mountains surrounding it. I love this fertile earth and the beasts that roam on it, especially my good buddy Peanut - a horse I've had since I was 5 years old. He's a little grumpy in his old age but is really such a smart, sweet fellow.

I graduated from the University of Utah last May and plan to start law school next fall.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that everyone has something to offer this world, there is no effort too small. I believe in being open to friendly criticism and impervious to the malicious and that people should be allowed to live their lives as they please without fear of being ridiculed or judged.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I can't do much more than give advice on things to do in Utah right now. Bummer, I know.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My friends and I stayed with a couple of Parisians for a few days when we were doing a study abroad in northern France. That's it so far. Until recently I only had a small sleeping nook with no couch at all so...yeah, I was the only one who could fit in there.

Interests

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov (yes I am a little obsessed with Dostoevsky), Hank the Cowdog, a Series of Unfortunate Events, anything by Charles Dickens or Roald Dahl, The Historian, Moby Dick, and most things by Mark Twain.

Music: I haven't decided on a favorite genre exactly but I like Billy Joel, Johnny Cash, Hinder, Josh Groben, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the music doled out to me by my friend Austin (which is mostly Indie I think)

Movies: Life is Beautiful and The Princess Bride top the list

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once, when I was about 17, we had a huge, early-spring snowstorm. Something that's always mystified me is how during snowstorms, because of the pressure change, cows will often give birth if they are anywhere near ready. It seems contrary to natural survival instinct. Anyway, we usually don't have storms this bad near my home and we were unprepared. The cows were in a distant pasture and the snow made it impossible to get to them in any kind of vehicle. Quite a few had their calves in the snow and it was much too cold for newborns. My dad and I saddled our horses, borrowed a couple of childrens' snow sleds and rode out to the distant pasture. We couldn't really see because of the driving snow and even our horses had a hard time pushing their way through the deep drifts. Eventually we made it though. We had to load the nearly frozen calves onto the sleds one by one and use our horses to pull them back to my house. We took them into our basement where my mother and sisters were armed with heat lamps and hair dryers. By the time we were finished, I had a sheet of ice on my face and couldn't feel my limbs. We saved them though and when the sun came out again they were ready to rejoin their mothers. It was exhilarating to struggle so hard to save lives and then to actually succeed.

Teach, Learn, Share

Um, I'm not exactly sure what to put here but I'm quite good at western style horseback riding and would be happy to take you on a ride if you happen to pass through southern Utah. Also, if anyone wants to learn how to deliver a newborn lamb, I'm your girl! Me, I would like to learn to play polo and realize my dream of seeing a whale before I die.
