I'm a Scottish bloke living in Lisbon who enjoys travelling and collecting vinyl. I am a singer/songwriter who writes music so varied a chameleon would be proud, also have aspirations to be a film director. Look out Tommy Wiseau, you've got competition! HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I let people stay in my room on a king size inflatable mattress (I used to host in a glorious tent which I have taken to many countries, including: 🇪🇪🇮🇸🇳🇱🇵🇱🇵🇹🇷🇴🇷🇺🇪🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) However due to not being able to host as per my landlord’s request, I have had to relinquish such an idea as I would need to dismantle it every morning and for a novelty, it’s simply not worth the hassle). I want to give people who would otherwise not get a chance to be hosted, to use Couchsurfing. There are too few men, couples, families and people over a certain age who are not afforded the ability to be hosted by strangers due to many male hosts misusing the website and exploiting it as a means to get their hole. As a result I also want to be able to provide a safe place to stay for women also.

Also, I should add that if you're a women and wanting a safe place to stay, please try Host a Sister. It's a fantastic community that's female (including Trans women) only, where women can host other women, and is a good alternative to CS.

I have hosted nearly 500 travellers (more than 250 of which were in 2019) and stayed with 30 hosts. I have also travelled quite a bit and met many people through hang-outs. I went a bit mad for a few months and hosted about 20+ people in a week at one point and in one month, hosted 49 guests, and in 12 months, over 300! But due to my work schedule and the demands of my hobbies, I have little free time, so can only host for 2 days max usually. However, if you have anything on your profile or request to make me change my mind, then go for it. I also now only host a few times a month, so if I decline, this is most likely the reason. I also recently moved, and my room is considerably smaller than the room I had in my last flat, so I’d rather host less frequently, as I need to move around furniture for the mattress to fit, which is a bit of a faff and only want to have to do that from time to time.

As I want to enjoy the company of the people who stay, this isn’t a hostel, remember. I have had a few people who treated it as such and I have received negative references because of such people who expected a room to themselves, which is pristine, provide food for them, or show up at all hours in the morning expecting me to let them in. I have work in the morning, please be respectful and set a time to meet at my flat. If you aren’t willing to follow these rules, go to a hostel/hotel.

My first year of Couchsurfing was very strange as the first 6 months I did not host many people, 32 to be precise but in the second half of the year, I hosted 122 guests! I started to take it seriously, trying to actively assist others finding somewhere to stay. I hope to continue doing so, while at the same time, not impeding my mental health, which means far fewer people haha.
