About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore strange new countries, to seek out pre-existing life and civilizations, to boldly go where several hundred thousand tourists have gone before!

ABOUT ME

Briefly, I'm a nice and funny guy who would like to explore the world a bit more before I am consumed by my career. I admit to a love of board/card/video games. Before any stereotypes are invoked, know that I eat (reasonably) healthy, keep fit, practice yoga, and enjoy nature (sometimes a closet treehugger). And I have never lived in my parent's basement. I'm outgoing and enjoy parties/gatherings.

I enjoy new experiences and places, especially if I have a local person to help orient me (I have shockingly little common sense sometimes).

I like learning about new cultures, religions, and traditions, so expect questions and an interested listener! :)

PHILOSOPHY

Personal responsibility, honesty, and insight are paramount. My guiding principle is to be able to take care of myself (not at the expense of others) and at the same time be self-reflective enough to avoid hubris.

I like to be considerate and friendly, and basically have a "live and let live" approach to life.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I donated to CS to verify myself, but since I'm not at home I can't get their postcard to type in the code. Rest assured though, it's coming!

As I have just started, I guess I participate by being an excellent surfer. Momma Johnson raised me to "always go for the Best Guest award" when I was at someone's home, so hopefully I'll do her proud!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None yet!

Interests

Video games, board games, card games, improv games/humor, yoga, dancing (zumba, hip hop, and belly), martial arts, art (watercolor and photography, especially), relics, animals/biology, science, history/anthropology.

I would be happy to talk to you about my art or show you a few tae kwon do moves (if you have nunchucks, I can show you how to impress your friends!).

Music, Movies, and Books

I like a rather eclectic mix of music. I don't look down on anyone for their musical tastes and hope others afford me the same courtesy; beauty is in the ear of the listener.

Here's a list of some artists/bands I've enjoyed, in case you love them and want to host a kindred listener: Nightwish, Epica, Portishead, Client, Lady Gaga, Aphex Twin, Sirenia, Blue Play, Bond, Trentemoller, Life Toward Twilight, Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Nox Arcana, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sarah Brightman, Daft Punk, Trans-siberian Orchestra, and cheesy 1980s American rock music

Books tend to be fantasy and sci fi, as do movies. But "Thor" still sucked.

Books of note are Perdido Street Station, Cracked (by Dr. Drew), America: the Book, anything by Neil Gaiman, The Road Less Traveled, and Special Topics in Calamity Physics (which not a textbook!).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went on a week-long medical mission to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti, and helped traet the population there. The medical team was with Project Medishare, a SUSTAINABLE medical program that is completely integrated with the locals. I can tell you about it for the low, low price of a few nights on your couch. :)

Teach, Learn, Share

1. Polygamy has been illegal in Utah since it became a state.
2. You can survive in Miami without speaking Spanish.
3. If you're going to get martial arts training for use in the real world, I would suggest modern jujitsu. Leave the Drunken Master Style to me.

I can teach you about America, Tae Kwon Do, science, video games (and other games), and to a certain degree, medicine.

Also, I'm very proficient in the English language; better than most Americans by far. If you want someone to help you learn (including slag) or proofread a document for work, I'm your guy!
