About Me

ABOUT ME

I’m a Brazilian historian. I have lived most of my life in a little city of a southern province of Brazil [Rio Grande do Sul]. I grew up there, learned a beautiful profession with my grandfather [I’m a woodworker], and was also in this place that I discovered my passion on the human past – and present. In this sense, I’ve got a B.A. and a M.A. in History – a time that gave me good friends.

However, in 2014, I wanted to make something different in my life, and so I decided to pursue what was on that time a dream: getting a Ph.D. degree in History in Rio de Janeiro. Well, that’s what I’m doing right now. My research is about African-Brazilian intellectual history. Throughout the 2 years that I’m living here [In Niteroi, a city in the side of Rio] I have met some interesting new people, ideas and places. One of these places is widely known. The historical archives where I do research are in the city of São Paulo. I developed, as well as with Rio, a love for the city; I consider that I live there too, in certain sense.

The desire to have new academic, but mainly life experiences, in spite of the places I like and the people I love here, put me in front of a new challenge: to do a 9 months doctoral internship in Columbia University, in New York city – beginning in Sept/16 –, where I want to continue to… well, met new people and make other questions, all over again.

PHILOSOPHY

I think a good "philosophy" would be the one of making questions, about everything – and also about me. I believe that questions lead us away and make life more interesting.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My experience in Couchsurfing is in the first steps. Saving some bucks is good, of course, but knowing people, making friends, finding new ideas, discovering other “souls” of the places, that is priceless.

Interests

I really like to travel [mostly by bus, allways looking through the windows...].
I am an Art, Music, Cinema an Literature lover.
I also appreciate simple things, like I coffee [or a beer hehe] and a good conversation with someone.

  • traveling
  • cultural immersion
  • new experiences
  • making friends

Music, Movies, and Books

Brazilian music in general... MPB, Samba, Bossa-Nova... but Jazz, Soul, Reggae, Pop Music, Classic Rock are some of my favorite music styles. I'm very eclectic. I felt sad when Amy Whinehouse died, but I'm glad nowadays to have been listening to Lianne La Havas.

Movies? Hard question. I have a habit of going to the movies at least one time every week. I prefer Dramas and Historical movies, but sometimes I also watch Thrillers, Action or a Comedy style movies. Big fan of Game of Thrones ;)

About books? Another difficult one. Reading is parte of me. I read different kinds of books: historical, fictional, sociological, about travel... Allways reading something. Authors: Philip Roth, Virginia Woolf, Graciliano Ramos, Kafka, Lima Barreto, Céline.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I had a great time in the amazing Planetarium of Buenos Aires, in Argentina.
I enjoy amateur astronomy and allways try to visit the planetariums of the cities I go.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I can teach some portuguese, and also some brazilian [from my mother and grandmother's] receipts!

As a woodworker, I can help you fixing something hehe

As a historian, I've been reading, studying and reasearching about African-Brazilian history, as well as the African Diaspora throughout the world. I would be glad to have any conversation about this very interesting and important issue with someone!

From learning... I consider myself an open minded person. We are allways learning with the people we meet and the different cultures we came across. Why not to try it through Couchsurfing?

What I Can Share with Hosts

My memories, my ideias, fragments of my life experience, a coup of coffee, a glass of wine, a beer... also a good dish - or a pizza hehe
