One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The completely unexpected look of gratitude in a person's eyes after you've changed their life without feeling like you did very much

I experienced this in three instances. The first time was back in high school when I went with a youth ministry to build houses in underdeveloped areas of Mexico. It did not feel like my greatest work. They were only 20' x 10' two room houses. But for them, that was shelter from the cold and the rain, it was privacy, it was ownership, it was a place to lay their heads at night. And I was the only member of our group that spoken fluent Spanish so I got to talk to all of the families that we helped. It was surreal to say the least

The next time was in college. I became a part of a group that brought underprivileged students from the Los Angeles area for a 3 day 2 night all expenses paid outreach experience at UC Santa Barbara. My job one year was to find housing for all of the 120 students that we brought. We were able to house them in some of the nicer dorms thanks to the generosity of the UCSB community. For those two nights I had the honor of knowing that I helped put 120 people to bed

As for that third time, well you'll just have to ask : 1
